I am applying for my spouse for a TRV visa to enter canada. We originally have a visa extension letter for 6 months. But when I apply for the TRV visa can I ask for a longer period than what it states on the extension?

How does she qualify for a longer stay as a visitor? I hear some individuals are able to obtain a 10-yr multiple entry visitor visa.

There is no such thing as a "visa extension letter". Most probably you are confusing TRV and visitor status. A TRV is used to enter Canada (this can be valid for up to 10 years) once in she is given a visitor status which normally goes up to 6 months.

Please clarify the terms and ask the question accordingly, as the answer is different if asking for a TRV, extension or visitor status.
