If you don't already have a visitor record, can you still apply for one online?
That is what they issue, if you are approved.

Yes you can Kerianne but a mailed in app would likely give you longer implied status : )

One big disadvantage is, if an inland application is refused there is no right of appeal.

Second extension approved!

My partner's first visitor record was for 3 months only, since the IO at the border wasn't too confident about his ties to the U.S. We applied for a 6 month extension to that and got it (but still hadn't submitted the PR application). Shortly after that we went down to the States for a family reunion and to get some of his summer clothes.

We submitted another extension request on November 1, the day before the previous extension expired. We submitted it electronically at around 5 pm on the day before it ran out, asking for a 1 year extension. Anyway, they approved it on December 14, mailed the new visitor record on December 16, and we received it in Quebec today, December 22, so it took 52 days including mailing time.

I sent a record of my employment as a graduate student at my university over the last 6 years, and a contract for about a month of current employment there with a promise of future contracts.

I discussed our plans to spend Christmas at my parents' on Ontario, and my partner's deside to explore more of central Canada in the coming months after we had a very enjoyable trip to Newfoundland last spring.

They had asked for a medical report with the last extension which we had already done previous to that.

In another 5 weeks we will have been living together for one continuous year, but we still haven't sent the application. (We're good at procrastinating.) I'm wondering now if we should wait and make it a common law instead of a conjugal partnership application, but I think we have a very solid case for a conjugal one and we really need to have two incomes as soon as possible.

Anyway, it was a great early Christmas present. We are now assured of whatever benefits accrue to common law partners (mostly income tax I think) for 2011. (Plus I don't want to live without him and vice versa. I don't quite know how I could have survived if the outcome had been different. I quite used to always having him here.)

Just wanted to update the present situation and get some advice if I may.

We are about to send in our application for common-law now as our year together has now passed so that's all good. My questions are these:

My visitor record from my extension runs out mid october, our initial plan had been for me to return to the UK and then return in early December as the immigration officers at Ottawa last year told me that with a permanent resident application in process then returning into Canada would be easier and likely to be allowed. However wherever I read be it here or on the government site there is no solid evidence to say this and it seems to be on the whim of whomever you see at immigration. My last passport stamp now says August 2010 but although I know I could fill in my form on the plane to say i'm just coming for two weeks or something and as long as they don't put the leave date in by the new stamp I could stay 6 months but I don't want to do that, I want everything to be above board.

My other option is to apply for another extension, currently it says 76 days online and 153 by paper. This would give me applied status that should see our application well under way. If I am refused an extension then I would probably just go back for say 3 months and then try to come back. If I were to apply by paper then that should see the reply back around mid to late March, by which time our application would be have been in for about 6 months, so then if I were refused extension I could go back and wait it out until our decision which would be around 3 months or so going on the current London processing times. If I am allowed the extension then hopefully that should see us through until we get a decision.

Anyway just wanted to get some advice or thoughts from those who've been through similar situations or have knowledge of it

MidMatt,
Pay for your permanent resident application now (you can send the application later), copy the PR app' receipt and send it with your extension application (by post).

Ask for a one year extension.

BTW it is "Implied status" not "applied status".

Haha, just saw that I had typed applied! Thanks for the advice, will make sure it's paid and have the receipt before sending off the extension application. Do you think sending it is the best way simply because of the extra time to process it, or is there any other reason you suggested that way?

I did exactly as I stated to you, I was granted a full year, that was after previous extensions.

Extra time is the reason for postal.
Remember to send the application by a method that provides a signature on delivery.

You pay for the permanent resident application online and print the receipt.

Thanks! How is your application going - is it done and approved now or what? Oh and did you apply outland?

My application went well.
I am a permanent resident living in Ottawa with my wife.
I did apply outland (spousal) while in Canada, my application was processed by the London UK office.

I am looking forward to dual citizenship :) FWIW Keep a note of all the days you spend in Canada.
