My husband had his interview for permanent residency from Nigeria to Canada. The interviewer asked him what happened with my relationship between me and my son's father. My husband stated we had a disagreement and were divorced over 20 years ago. The interviewer threw all his paperwork at him and stated he lied that we weren't married and he should know if I was married in the past or not. My husband then explained to the man that Nigerian custom is that once you have children with someone you are considered married and when you end the relationship you divorce. The man wouldn't listen to my husband. Where can we go from here? Please help!!!!!!!!!

1. You wait for the refusal letter and then you appeal. See: http://www.irb-cisr.gc.ca/eng/brdcom/references/procedures/proc/iadsai/info/Pages/marriage.aspx
2. Probably not a do it yourself project

Who was your visa officer? My husband is also Nigerian and at his interview at the Canadian embassy in Ghana, the visa officer also flew into a rage and threw his papers back at him. They were all in a big, jumbled mess on the floor. I don't want to complain before he gets a visa (if), but this seems so unprofessional to me.

In your case, you can appeal. Just gather up even more evidence that you have a genuine marriage, and I agree that you'd be better off with a lawyer helping you.

Hello Prairie,
I hope you will be successful in your appeal. I am also in the process of sponsoring my husband. I hope we dont experience the same level of unprofessionalism.

I have read this site a lot to assist with the preparation of our application package (I am sponsoring my CL partner and we live in Canada). We have elected to apply outland through Buffalo because of the fast processing times, proximity for interview (he has a visa to enter the US), so that the application will not be forfeit if he needs to return to Mexico for an emergency and is not permitted to re-enter Canada, and to maintain a right of appeal.

Literally 20 minutes ago my partner and I were talking about the benefits/costs of applying outland vs. inland and he asked why anyone applies inland if they have the opportunity to apply outland and maintain their right to appeal. Being a lawyer I am familiar with the JR process and I am also paid to imagine the worst possible scenario of every situation and prepare for it, so the thought of that being our only recourse fills me with anxiety. I thought immediately of Canadianwoman's experience, which stuck in my mind because it was so unprofessional. I mentioned that if our only outland choice was Accra I would want to apply inland and take my changes with a JR in the (admittedly unlikely) event of rejection.

Very sorry to hear that it has happened again and I wish everyone luck with their appeals.
