Hey there,

My girlfriend currently lives in Canada and I'm currently in the United States. I'm looking to move in with her and get a visa. We were looking at doing something along the lines of either a work permit or spousal visa. Would it be possible to go there as a visitor and have my status changed while I'm there?

Another thing that we have a question about that might mess with the visa process is we are going to be teaching English as a foreign language in either Japan or Korea coming this January. Will doing that negatively affect an application for a Canadian visa? Is the best course of action to come as a visitor and then apply for the visa once we are in either Japan or Korea?

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to this, we are trying our best to make this happen and get this done!

You can't even begin to apply for PR or any visa through family class, until you are married or officially common-law (having lived together in same house for 12 consecutive months). If you don't satisfy either of those, then you'll need to look at getting a work permit on your own.

As long as you submit an Outland application, it doesn't matter where in the world you're living during the application process.

Okay great, yeah we figured as such regarding which visa I would need. So we could be essentially anywhere in the world while it processes as long as we keep up with it?

I still don't understand exactly what you want to apply for. Is your gf a Canadian citizen or PR and you want to apply for PR through family class, or is she a TFW just working in Canada?

If she's a Canadian citizen, and you are married or officially common-law, then you can both live anywhere in the world during application process. She would just need to show intent to return to Canada after the PR is approved.

If she's a PR of Canada, then you can be anywhere in the world, but she must remain a resident of Canada during application process.
