"Hi all,

Question for you regarding address change:

I am currently "visiting" my wife in Canada (and plan on renewing my visitor visa until my PR is approved).

My address on ECAS is my father's home address back in the U.S. He's selling his house, and thus I need to change the address.

Can I change my address to my wife's Canadian address without raising suspicion? And is the address on ECAS where the CIC would send my future paperwork once approved?

Thank you in advance!"
Raise suspicion how? If you have a valid visitor record you are fine. Americans don't get visas for visiting, you just pay them to extend your status, basically. Confusing I know. Sign into ECAS with your info (not your sponsors) and change it. Make sure it was showing your old address.

No, it won't raise suspicion. You're in the country legally. And yes, this is where they will send your COPR once it's approved.

It does take a good bit of time sometimes for it to update in eCAS.

I've been on 'visitor' status in Canada since Dec 2013. When I applied for my residency, I told them flat out that I was living here with my common-law partner and I've had the Canadian address on file the entire time. CIC doesn't care so much about this. I wouldn't tell CBSA you are 'living in Canada' though. lol As long as you've maintained your status, either by requesting extensions or leaving for short periods every six months, you are in the clear.

Thanks, all! What would I do without you?

I emailed about an address change over a month ago, and I still haven't seen anything. I'll go ahead and use the online form to change it to the Canadian Mailing Address.

Thanks!

You can change the address on the case specific enquiry tool on the CIC website. I would call to confirm it has been changed after about a week because CIC usually does not confirm receipt that they changed the address. I would change it asap because the mailing address which is your father's US address is where they send your COPR to. I put my partner address in Canada even though I am residing in the US and do not see how that is suspicious at least the COPR would get there quicker and would not have to pass customs if were sent to her address than my address in the USA.

So I have a question. I have heard that CIC will ask for my passport, or copies of all pages before they send me my COPR, is that what everyone else has had happen? I just want to know if I will need to wait until they ask for that and then wait again for them to send me my COPR so I can finally land. I am itching to get this all behind me after over 2 years of not being able to do anything while gathering documents then the process of inland app that got sent back and now outland app that has DM. I know the end is near I just want to know how close it might really be. We plan to go back into Washington State, we are on Vancouver Island, and maybe see some of my kids or drive to California to see my mother who has never met my husband although I have known him nearly 6 years and married for almost 3, but it is so hard to plan anything right now.

That's usually just for people from visa-requiring countries, so they can stamp the passport for entry. You'll just get the COPR being American.

Thanks Aquakitty I was not sure since I heard that they sometimes as for it even from visa exempt countries.

Also for whoever let us know that living abroad with our spouse would make us exempt from the living in Canada requirements in order to keep our residency. Good information for us in the future if we decide we want to live both in the US and Canada.

Yea they can ask for the passport, or ask for pages from the passport from anyone, but since you are American that's very unlikely to happen.

It is looking very good on this. When I checked eCAS on Monday I found that a new category had been added for PR Card and it was in a Decision Made category. It had 1)Request for PR Card submitted 8/22. 2) PR Card approved 8/22. 3)PR Card to be mailed 8/22. - That all happened on a Saturday! Since they only have a USA address that must be where it will be mailed.

I found elsewhere on the forum a link to the CIC guide (ENF-23) for dealing with evaluating Residency Obligations and the two big exceptions for time out of the country are 1) a Canadian citizen spouse or 2) working for a Canadian company abroad. You need to be able to prove in some sensible manner that you did co-habitate for the time away otherwise the regular timing rules apply.

In my case, with the information that I had submitted for the sponsored immigration, it actually clearly showed that I had a previous PR status, and this was finally accepted to allow me to remain a PR after 31 years away. The CIC document ENF-23 seems to want the PR status respected as a right and not arbitrarily dismissed. This is also very different for a US Green Card. Leave the country for 6 months without special paperwork and it is toast. It then turns out that a second green card is much harder to get (because why would you ever want to leave the US). We found this out with my Canadian wife coming into the US.

So a thank you to Canada for welcoming me back.

I've read a bit about people who have renewed their visitor status while in canada waiting for their Outland application to be approved... How does this work?
-is a U.S. Citizen in Canada for 6months+ allowed to apply to extend their visit while waiting for their spousal sponsorship?
-when filling out the forms, do u say that u r living in Canada? Technically my husband is still living in the U.S. (Has a home and mobile phone and insurance). He's just been here for 5 months and might as well stay because he's not working in the U.S. and we anticipate our visa being approved by the end of this year.

I'll read through the CIC site again, but any info from you all is always welcome!

Cillyx5, I have gotten 2 extensions on my visitor status one was after we sent in my PR application. For that one I did put that I was living with my husband here in Canada. They did want proof that my husband was approved to sponsor me and that I had done medicals. Although my husband had been approved a few months before our immigration consultant suggested I still ask for a 2 year extension just in case things with CIC got messed up, because we all know they can. I was approved for a 2 year extension back in March 2015 and just this last weekend on August 23 my PR app went to DM. I am an October 16, 2014 applicant. It looks like you applied in June of this year, although you may get DM by the end of the year, and I hope you do as the waiting can feel like life passes you by, do not count on it as it could be several months into 2016 before your DM. I would be proactive with an extension always better to be safe than sorry for any reason.

We received Marcus___________ application for permanent residence on April 7, 2015.
We started processing Marcus ______________'s application on May 20, 2015.
