My 'current address' on ecas was also just updated to saying just the city and province. I believe that is because that is what we filled out on the form as 'moving to...' since we didn't have an exact address. So maybe that's normal? Ours still says 'in progress' though! So no COPR for us yet!

Notice that I said not supposed to - I've heard people say they've been able to obtain a permanent SIN from before actually landing. I just think that's a mistake on the part of someone at Service Canada.
Uno momento por favor.......Computergeek, you shared this info last week:

Does one have to be a landed immigrant before apply for a job, or is the COPR enough?

You don't even have to be a landed immigration to apply for a job. To work in a job you must either be a foreign national in possession of a valid work permit OR you must be a permanent resident or Canadian Citizen. In all three cases, you must also have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) issued by Service Canada. Normally, once you have your COPR, Service Canada will issue a permanent SIN to you (it takes about 10 minutes)."

I guess I will see what Service Canada will do tomorrow. Cross your fingers! :)

So i just got my CPR form...not the card? It clearly says "NOT FOR TRAVEL" across both forms. My concern is the expiration date says 2013/7/30. That's just over two months?! I thought we would have up to 180 days to move/declare? Or is this document what I use to get my actual CPR card and from there I have 180 days (or something)? My wife and I won't be ready to move until roughly the end of August/early September so I'm a bit concerned right now.

The Confirmation of Permanent Residency is the document you will show to the border officer. They will process you and then you will change from "foreign national" to "permanent resident". You don't need to MOVE at that point - but you do need to present yourself at the border prior to the expiration date of that document. If you have family/friends, the permanent resident card can be mailed to them or you can wait until you have an address and then apply for your first PR card - this should be done within 180 days of becoming a permanent resident.

Also remember that you can "land" at a Service Canada office as well. Only thing is, I think I remember reading once you land, you can't travel for some time? Someone's probably in the know more on that particular.

My wife and I are going to a convention in Toronto (Mississauga?) on Memorial Day weekend (less than two weeks from now) and we really don't want anything to interfere with our border crossing. At the same time, I want to make sure this is done and set as soon as possible. The papers I received today...can I take those to Canada (Niagara Falls, ON) this weekend and get this..."done", and still cross the border the next weekend? Does this basically start the 180 days?

Exactly. I want to make sure that taking these papers to the border and going through with this paperwork doesn't lock us in or something. If it begins our 180 days, that's totally fine, but as I mentioned above, my wife and I aren't planning on moving until around the end of August.

That's fine. Just make sure you have someone's Canadian Address to send the PR card to.

SIN and Service Canada trip.... I wasn't issued a social insurance number. The SC officer, who was so sweet, after taking me through most of the process and collecting all my paperwork, said the information needed in the computer was either 1) the Landing Document or 2) the signature and badge # of the officer who signed the Landing Doc. Of which, I had neither. She sympathetically explained that they don't get training on this and apologized! I appreciated that sentiment. But, DARN! Guess I'm still a kept woman until July/August. ;D

So could my wife and I take my CPR paperwork we just received (with one image attached to a page?) to Niagara Falls, NY this weekend and get this done/started? Her parents have a Canadian address so I could have it sent there I believe. I just want to confirm that once I take this paperwork to Canada and submit it, that we'll have roughly 180 days from THAT date (May 18th is a Saturday) to actually move to Canada...

That would be fine. Just go on a day trip or something to Canada :)

Once you have landed you have at least two years before you even need to worry.

But I was told we have to move within 180 days to avoid paying taxes on our belongings.
