US citizen do i need visitor visa to go see boyfriend in QUEBEC for 6 months or

Hello I met my boyfriend online 7 months ago. I have been to see him 3 times in montreal and met his parents and he has also been here to meet my parents several times. We have also traveled to niagara falls together. Do i need a visitor visa to go see him . I will be studying there ( in montreal also ) but under six months so i know i DO NOT need study visa. We are trying to establish ourselves possibly as common law there. Do i as a U.S. need a visitor visa????? and if so can i then apply for extention, prior to it expiring, once I am there so we can live together for a year possibly?????? or should i just go and stay six months come home and go back.

My husband was a permanent resident of US (Florida), he never applied for a Visitor Visa to come and visit me here in Victoria BC.
He moved with me permanently after I sponsored him as my spouse.
