I am a US citizen currently staying with my spouse in Canada on a visitors visa. We are send of our inland PR application on Monday. When I received the I initial TRV at the border the officer told me I could travel to the US to grocery shop and stuff. We live five minutes from the border. On the visa it says does not authorize reentry. I have also read that once I leave Canada my visa expires. I would like to visit my friends if I could but I don't want to chance voiding my inland application. Does anyone know if I can safely?
The chance of CIC cancelling your application over a short day trip for groceries in very unlikely. Even a short weekend trip to visit family *should* be ok. But there is no guarantee. It depends on how much risk you can tolerate. Obviously the longer you are away the greater the risk.

It's up to the immigration officer if you are allowed back into Canada or not. Since you hold a US passport, chances are you will be. But there's always some small chance you won't. You should keep travel outside of Canada to a minimum until you're approved for PR and have your landing interview. Definitely skip the grocery shopping trips to the US and anything of that sort since they create unnecessary risk.
yeah that's true. No matter how small, is it worth the risk to save a few bucks on groceries?

MY EXPERIENCE LAST WEEK- I will tell you EXACTLY what happened when crossing a border last week. This was by land going into Alberta from Montana.

Canadian husband is sponsoring me (American wife) as a spouse. We did not yet submit our application but had just one more day to work on it before we would be done with it. I have crossed from the USA to Canada about 12 times this past year to be with him on 10 day visits and vacations. Never had a problem.

This time, since we are now married and our application is complete, I planned on VISITING him for a few months. I had a few suitcases packed, no furniture, but enough stuff to last me through a long trip. We called about 4 borders all through Canada to ask what we should say when crossing the border. Each one told us "You say that you are coming for an extended STAY but are NOT moving" That made sense.

We got to the border and I tell the agent just that I am coming for a few months stay. They pulled us inside for further questioning. I have no criminal record, no record of over-staying any visa, etc. The agent drilled me with questions about my job (self-employed), my residence, etc. I left my entire application package on the front seat of the car just so that I could grab it to prove that I am being sponsored. For some reason, the agent asked me "how do you know the man you are with?" I replied "He's my husband" She then told me to sit down. She grabbed my car keys and went immediately for the car to find incriminating things. She went through all of my personal belongings including my binder of lease agreement, finance stuff, etc. She again drilled me "Are you trying to move here?" I repeatedly said "no" because I am not allowed to MOVE until I have a resident permit. She then asked why I have an application package in the car. I told her I am being sponsored. Again she asked me "you have a lot of things with you, are you trying to move here?" At this point I am crying my eyes out because she is trying to get me to admit that I am "MOVING" when I am not supposed to be. I again say to her "no I am not allowed, I am only coming for an extended stay until my application is approved".

This point she takes my phone from me and goes through every single text message I have. I have a few messages telling my close friends that I am moving up to Canada for a little bit, etc. She then pulls her supervisor over to talk to me at the counter. She is now telling her supervisor that I am lying about my intent in Canada. Her supervisor (head hancho of that border crossing) looks at me and says "Ma'm are you trying to move here?" I start bawling my eyes out because I AM NOT MOVING UNTIL I HAVE MY PERMIT. He told me to "cut the crap" and finally I gave in saying "Yes, I intend to move here eventually, beginning now I guess"

At this point he tells my husband to get our marriage certificate and bring it to him. This piece of paper SAVED my butt. He looked at it and told the original agent "calm down, they're already married, she's going to get approved for residency, they're going through" The female agent tried to protest by showing him a few texts I sent out saying I found work in Canada, which wasn't true, I just wanted a few people to have closure with me. She told me to my face that I was being a liar. The supervisor told her to "shut up".

He then said to me "You should have been honest with us in the first place, then we can work with you properly." The idiot agent didn't even ask me if I was being sponsored when I told her I was married. Idiot.

She then gave me a proper 6-month Visa with a note in the system "married xxxxx xxxx, is applying for sponsorship for residency, etc" this paper will allow me to go back and forth now un-harassed hopefully. Any border agent will see the note in the system from now on.

The end.

Ps- I cried all the way to his house in Calgary. It was the worst experience of my life.

chessnut - sorry to hear of your experience. That's terrible!

Just goes to show that all it takes is one border official with a bad attitude to ruin things. But good for you that you refused to give into intimidation tactics and stuck to your guns.

It does remind me a bit of the Border Security episode where a couple was returning to Canada from Korea. The Canadian guy had sponsored his Korean wife and the plan was to live together in Canada while the PR went through. She said she was just visiting but they saw she had a lot of bags and they searched them and found a farewell card addressed to her wishing her luck on her move to Canada and enjoy life there. From there they were hammering her. Finally they let her through after they explained the full plan. Wow they really focus on the words "MOVE/WORK/LIVE" in almost any context.

Let me just explain that I don't ever plan on risking my future to go grocery shopping. That is just the example the border officer gave me. I just wanted to know if I could visit my friends without hassle. I had one bad experience before we were married and after reading more peoples stories I will have them come to me.

There's no guarantee. Always a small chance you could be refused reentry. That's why you should really apply outland if you have any need to leave Canada during the PR process.

I am so sorry that happened to you, chessnut. Thank goodness you were prepared. It can be such a stressful situation and the questions and tone can make it so much worse than it has to be. I hope that is your 1 out of 101 times.
I have found during my own border crossing experiences the Canadian guards to actually be less friendly than the American ones (and I'm Canadian). One Canadian guard, after asking me the basic re-entry questions, looked over at my dog, made a face and said, "Your dog is so ugly". What the heck purpose does that serve besides to be mean?

LOL what do you even say to that! 'Uh... sorry?' I have noticed that too. I used to cross at the Peace bridge in Ontario almost once a week. The American guards were very nice (and often flirted with me, lol) or joked about the weather, etc. Crossing back into Canada? It was like I was being prosecuted for just being in front of them. Ah well.

My jaw dropped and he handed me back my passport. I doubt he'd have the guts to say something like that if he wasn't in that uniform.
And yes about the Americans. I've had conversations about minor league hockey, had one guy talk about his gf's job, was told to move to America if the Canadian PR process didn't go well, learned about family members, been teased about the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was even told "thank-you" in Korean after he learned I met my husband in S.K. It's getting to the point that I actually like crossing into the US!

I have to agree, the American guards seem nicer and friendlier than the Canadian.

I have to disagree. I cross the border several times a year....have never had any trouble with the Canadian side but have been pulled into secondary on the US side and even had a drug dog go through my car

Just goes to show everyone's experiences are different, which is why I usually avoided the random ('X' country is worse than the other in 'Y'). It is all your point of view. Personally I've had minimal issue with either side, though maybe the US side a bit more inquisitive.

chessnut...Thank you for posting your experience at the border with your luggage! I am leaving NJ in 2 weeks to have an extended stay with my husband as well. I have my application ready to go but my husband has been delayed in getting me his tax form, the last piece I need. Anyway, good to know what I may experience, and that I can prove I will be sponsored, and I have proof of my marriage certificate. I'm also glad to hear that they put it in the computer as to not hassle you much when crossing the border. I plan on crossing the border every 3 months as it is because my father is elderly and ill, hence why I'm applying outland! Well thank you so much for your experience, even though it was rough, I'm glad you're where you want to be!

Hi mapleafbride,
Just curious about your status on the web, did it change to in process? I'm from NY and processing office is in Ottawa and some say US applicants status doesn't say in process but it would say decision made. Is this true?
