I am a Canadian citizen and was laid off from work. So for about 5 months I received employment insurance benefits. Once I found out that I won't be able to sponsor my wife if I receive financial assistance, I urgently cancelled my EI benefits.

My question is, will this affect my application to sponsor my wife? I could repay the EI benfits I received for 5 months to prove that I can support her. I also received a OSAP student loan when I was in school which I'm planning to pay in full in the next 5 months. I hope someone can help me with this matter. I would really appreciate it.

Neither OSAP nor EI count as social welfare, so they won't make you ineligible to sponsor.

No need to repay the EI. Thats not a problem. U can go ahead and file ur application.
