Hi, I'm a Canadian/sponsor for my Korean wife. I, her sponsor, was recently laid off from full time work, and I was wondering if I can apply for EI without breaking any laws or otherwise jeopardizing the continued sponsorship of my wife.

(We moved back to Ontario from South Korea 9 months ago after living there for 5+ years. Went through the insane application process and somehow came out successful just a few months ago, when my wife got her PR card.)

Thank you.

Yes you can. EI is not welfare; you paid into it while you were employed.

Can anyone else confirm this?

You can be on EI but you have to be able to show that you can support yourselves so you will have to show savings, family support, etc.
