My husband and I will be returning to Canada from the United States with our newborn and need to get a Citizenship Certificate as soon as possible in order for the baby to be eligible for health coverage from Quebec. I read that the standard processing time of this certificate is at least 5 months from within Canada, but they have urgent processing for situations like ours. Specifically, I'm citing the urgent basis from the CIC website that "You need a citizenship certificate to access certain benefits such as a pension, a Social Insurance Number, or health care." Does anyone know how quickly the "urgent" applications are typically processed? I'm wondering if that means it may be processed in 4 months or it could be processed in a matter of weeks. I can't seem to find any information about this online.

Thanks!

there is quite a bit of info missing here ... what is your status? if you are canadian citizen, then the child is a canadian citizen already ... contact the embassy to get what you need, since he is a canadian.

My husband is a Canadian citizen and I am a permanent resident. I was under the impression that filing at an embassy would add months onto the process and that it was better to file once we got back to Canada. Do you suggest going to the nearest Canadian embassy in the U.S. then?

It only took 3 months for me to get my son's proof of citizenship certificate....and that was via the Consulate here in China. I imagine for an urgent case, they can have everything completed within a month or so. I'd call the nearest Consulate to find out.

Good luck and congrats on the newborn!
