UK has started taken a harsher view of immigrants. I see two things that are happening there:

1. The population and the politiicians are starting to become averse to immigrants and immigration. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8442662.stm

2. With the joining in EU, more eastern european workers are streaming into the country, with density there is always chances of friction.

While these may seem issues for New immigrants, it would be interesting to see if they apply it retro-actively to earlier immigrants.

Canada was a far more welcoming choice even though I qualified for the UK and it aligned well with my long term goals even over US.

Just my few cents

Interesting to see someone preferred Canada over UK or US.... considering EU and US has larger economies?

The UK's tier 2 system is going through multiple changes and they introduce new norms every few months which are basically tightening eligibility.

Anyone outside the European Union basically has a tougher challange in viewing that country from a long term basis: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article5908542.ece

In the US things are fine but their immigration system equivalent of PR, the green card is a dream and its a long wait more than 6 years in cases.

Canada is atleast telling me I wil have a certain decision in 12-16 months, 12 of which passed quickly!

I know the OP had asked for opinions of folks living in UK and Canada, but my opinion is formed by various factors, I am willing to slug it out but I need some re-assurance of the light at the end of the tunnel ::)

In my decision I considered which country might welcome me after 5 years and consider me a equal contributor, As for the economies the national debt shows an interesting story : http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=canadian+national+debt+vs+us+national+debt+vs+great+britain+debt

But UK is currently the EASIEST Country in the Western World to get immigration. I was looking at the UKBA website and it seems that one can qualify for the 75 points just by getting through in 2 categories - 35 points for a Master's Degree and 40 points for earning more than 35,000 pounds per year - which is approximately 60,000 dollars per year(actually less than that).

I dont know about other countries - but I think almost 90% of people of Canada and USA who have a Master's Degree will easily qualify since if you have a Master's degree from North America - the average salary is about $72,000 dollars per year - way way above the $60,000 needed for UK Tier 1. Also, I believe that they are giving a decision on UK Tier 1 applications within 4 weeks - thats superfast.

RK2009 - it only takes 6 years to get US green card if you are BORN in India or China. Otherwise nowadays, it takes only about 2 years to get US Green Card - no longer than that.

One can see light at the end of the tunnel if you have the patience and just look within yourself.

Again, this can be debated but I would say just this, given experience of others who migrated along with my research, personally I felt the Canadian econonomy and opportunities to be better than the UK.

"Born in India or China".. yup that answers the concern itself.
