Simon,
I dont think carrying the expired passport is going to a tons of weight in your pocket.
In the event the immigration officer wants to check your previous TRV, it would be a problem.
If you are an outland applicant, carry the expired passport to prove that your passport expired and hence you got the PR stamp on the new passport.

Why do you want to take a risk at the end of the journey.

i think both has the valid point

Staple them together.

I think even if u have 3 or 4 passports expired all needs to be tagged together with current passport .(atleast Indian passports, have that rule)

You cannot separate the passports .. I have old and new passport .. Whenever there is a need of passport to carry , I carry both of them. Both the passports are tied together (rubberband/elastic).

ofcourse , the old one is invalid ... but still need to carry

You should always carry all your passports! Even if expired. Attach them with rubber-band. Atleast thats what the Passport office in India do when they give you a new one.

100% wrong information
Just carry valid one
And should be fine

As Asivad said, new passport is valid for travel and if the visa is in old passport you need that too.
If the visa is in new passport only then still carry the old passport as you may not know what they may ask.
In any case, to finish this discussion with a happy ending carry both passports and show whichever one they ask. Make it simple for yourself, the passports dont weigh much.
:)
