Hello everybody - I met my boyfriend online last in April of this this year, and we have been conversing online ever since. I went to visit him in Mexico for two weeks in October, and will be visiting him there again in January. He would like to visit me in Canada this coming summer (2013) for about a month. I know that he needs a TRV, and I am planning to provide him with a letter of invitation, showing that I will be paying for his return airfare, accommodations, and all other expenses while he is in Canada.

My question is this: CIC will want to know the nature of our relationship. Is it advisable to simply call him a "friend", or should I be completely up front about the fact that this is a romantic relationship? He will return to Mexico after this visit (he is in university, and plans to graduate in December 2013), but there is a good chance that if our relationship continues to develop, he will be interested in immigrating to Canada, with my sponsorship. We want to be as sure as possible that the initial TRV is approved, so he can actually visit me, and experience Canada! Any advice?

You mention that the invitation letter will include wording to the effect that you'll pay for his return flight, which implies he intends to arrive on a one-way ticket. That would be a huge mistake, and a giant strike against your chances for approval.

I was in a similar situation to yourself, just not a same sex relationship. My wife is from Mexico and before we were married she came up to visit myself and meet my parents. When she came she made it look like she was a tourist. No mention of me. She had a hotel reservation which we cancelled once she got here. We paid one night. She had the funds to cover her expenses while she was here. It worked out and she got a TRV. She got the TRV in a third of the time listed on the CIC website.

The next time she came before we filed for permenant residence we told CIC she was coming to visit my family that were not able to go to the wedding and that, I would assume all financial responsibility for her while she was here. I found a letter to CIC on a website and copied it just changing names and addresses and it again worked.

Bueno Suerte.
