TRV applied more than 6 months

I had applied for Canada TRV(Multiple) for myself and my family as one family application on 8th February 2012 at Abu Dhabi. I recevied an email from on 5th March 2012 for additional information and I replied the same on 6th March 2012. Till date whenever i sending an email i receive a reply stating application pending for background checks from last 5 months. I had visited following countries:
2008 to UK alone.
2009 to UK,Canada,France,Germany,Switzerland alone.
2010 to UK,France and Switzerland with family.
Currently i am having 10 years UK visa valid till 2021. Before this i was having 2 years UK visa. My family also got visa again to UK but expired this month waiting for Canadian TRV as our plan was to transit through UK. I also got visa for Australia and New zealand but could not visit due to official commitments. But never my application was delayed this much even with family also.
As i am living in UAE from more than 25 years with my brothers and sister and parents settled in UAE and all are working. I would like to ask, is the proceedure takes this much time for background checks as i had already visited canada previously that took only three weeks for TRV issuance.
With having many plus points as strong travel history, good funds available, settled family in UAE, previous visit to Canada, Good designation job. Is this OK to take more than 6 months for an application.

Just wanted to let you know that my brother inlaw along with his wife and two kids applied last summers in dubai as they wanted to visit the US and Canada in the summers...they got there visas after 9 months...
So they travelled this year...

The Abu Dhabi office seems to be extremly slow! My husband applied for a TRV (single entry) on July 15th and we still haven't heard anything. I knowit hasn't been as long as your wait, but we did indicate that my husband wanted to travel to Canada on August 25th at the start of his vacation and return for September 5th! As of today, we haven't heard ANYTHING from them, they haven't requested any additional infomation. We did call the embassy and all they did was give us an email address to contact and try to find out what the process of the application is- however, they do state that they will take 10-28 days to reply! Where you thinking of travelling to Canada this month or sometime early next year...I guess all you can do is wait!! They are extremly slow and very hard to get any useful information from! After followup email. I received a reply stating my application is still pending for background checks from March 2012 and as this is done by outside agencies they cannot comment when my application will be finalized. So 7 months completed and still waiting for background checks and application finalization.
