Tricky Study Permit Extension Delay Situation

Hello all,

I have applied to renew my study permit online around early March of 2015 while I'm in Canada, and I have recently contacted CIC and was informed that the application could be delayed until late August.

For the summer, I would like to spend some time with my family who is outside Canada. I am wondering if I can apply for a TRV while outside Canada to go back to Canada and wait for my study permit application to be finalized. Is this a possibility? Should I be applying for a student TRV (wouldn't this require a valid student permit?) or a visitor?
In my initial study permit extension application, I did not include a TRV renewal.


Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Dear Friend,

If you have applied for an extension, you are in applied status. A TRV will not be issued to you till a decision is reached by CIC.

In this situation you can leave the country but getting back in is going to be a great challenge. There are some options but they may be tricky.

So my advise stay in the country till you are granted your new permit.

I will advise you not to do this but if the situation is extreme important to you then,

Where are you planning to go?

Are you going back to the country of your origin? If yes, then

You have applied for your study permit and it will come to your residence in Canada. You will have to ask someone to mail it you in your home country. You will have to apply for the TRV in the Canadian Embassy located there. They will ask you the reason for not waiting in Canada and coming back with a TRV. Explain your urgency, there is a chance that you may get rejected. But the cases I have seen have been successful. Please make sure you have a strong reason and not the reason of a Vacation. It may ruin your chances.

Hello ADCan, I also applied for my study permit extension back in March and still waiting the decision! Did CIC agent mention why exactly it can take up to late August? I would really appreciate your input

Yeah, I am curious as well !! I applied back in March and also no news yet.. my husband will call CIC today, but I was hoping to know if they explain anything to you!

They said my application needs further review. I think it's case-specific to mine, but have heard others who applied in March getting delays as well.

I'm still wondering of the viability of applying for a TRV before they decide on my study permit, which is in late August, and that would not give me much time to apply for a new TRV to continue studying in early September.
Other reasons I have to leave Canada for are to maintain my residency in another country and a potential summer job (not sure if these reasons are good for leaving Canada).

Anyone has any experience or ideas about this?

1. You can apply for TRV only after SP approval. TRV can't be issued beyond SP validity.
2. You will lose the implied status (if any) if you leaves Canada before any decision.

No updates from my end. The status still shows as "open" when I check on the application online. It's quite frustrating.

I can't think of a reason, other than getting a new passport when I renewed it last time, for this delay/verification phase. Everything else was submitted exactly as requested.

We did actually, mentioning “an update” on our application!
That happened 3 times.
But when we checked, the application status was the same!

That s a good sign. When did the most recent? I believe u ll get result within this week!
