Hi everyone,

I am currently in Canada, and received my PPR today. The issue is that I need to travel to the US on December 14 for a week (needless to say that I cannot travel without my passport). If I submit my passport to CIC, is there a chance I get it back by December 14 or is that taking too big a risk? Even though the correspondence says that I have 60 days, I hate to lose out on almost a month because of my travel plans.

The correspondence from CIC says:

The requested information / documentation must be received in our office Within 60 days from the date of this letter . Failure to do so Could result in the Refusal of your application.

Final Note

The ISSUANCE of your visa (s) cannot be delayed so it is significant for you to submit your passport (s) as soon as possible. An expiration date (dd / mm / yy) Will Be Indicated on your visa and / or on your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR - IMM 5688), and you must Obtain permanent residence on or before That date. The visa and COPR cannot be extended. If you are not Prepared to live in Canada Permanently Effective time immediately your permanent residence is granted, please consult the CIC website Regarding your obligations to retain your status in Canada.

Nobody can tell you if you can get your passport by the required date, most chances you won't. But you do have 60 days to comply with PPR so why don't you just go to US and submit your passport afterwards?

The possibility of getting your passport back in 22 days, is low.

You can either cancel trip or submit asap after you return. And then you expedite shipping to send it to CIC.

This is what i know according to my knowledge.

Read the documents needed: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/whti-ivho/menu-eng.html

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately cancelling my trip is not an option. So I will look to send my passport immediately upon my return which should be well within the 60 day time-frame.

If you have travel, you should include copies of your itinerary demonstrating such travel when you submit your passport. I went through something similar last year (I had to send it to LA) and I included evidence of travel and explained that it was for a date that was not going to be moved. I submitted everything on 26 September and had my passport back two weeks later.

I also included a prepaid overnight mailer with my paperwork.

Do I need to do provide copies of my itinerary along with an explanation even though I will be submitting my passport well within the required 60 day time-frame? I am travelling to the US for personal reasons, and there is not any good explanation on why my travel dates cannot be changed (other than the fact that it is inconvenient, and I incur airline/hotel cancellations).

Even though computergeek got his PP back with in 2 weeks, still it is a very risky action. Even if you overnight everything, it may not get processed with in 20 days, which will result in abandoning your US trip.

Indeed, I also had a backup plan. The less time there is, the more likely you won't get it back in time. The safest thing is to wait until you return to submit your passport.
