Travel with expired PR card

A family friend whose PR card has expired, has applied for PR card renewal. CIC has not started processing yet. Is it safe for him to travel to US during 'US Thanksgiving' week-end and come back to Canada by private car?
If yes, what documents should he carry with him?

He should carry Confirmation of Permanent residence, of course along with passport.
