Yes i would get a new passport. They mention this in one of the forms as well:

You and your family members must have valid passports or travel documents. If any of the documents are to expire soon, you should renew them and provide copies of the new passport or travel document to the office processing your application.

You will need to renew it either way because they will not put a visa on an expired document.dwynf said:
I would renew it before submitting the application, if I was in your place. The passport is the document you will need to send to get the visa, so it's best that the copies you send are of the document you will use to get into Canada.
If you renew it while in processing, you will have to notify CIC and VO and it may even delay the process. So I think it's best to do it in advance.

Obviously you'll need a valid passport to become a PR. So you need to renew your passport.Betina said:

My wife renewed her passport during her application. I don't think it delayed her application at all. Just make sure to send a scan of it to the visa office as soon as you receive it.
