Hi, I am traveling across the Canadian border for a long weekend and returning to Canada by car with my expired PR card. I've applied for a renewal but not sure I'll have the new one. What type of documents do you recommend I bring to cross the border? I'm a US citizen. Thanks.

Passport and your expired card should be enough, assuming you're in compliance with residency obligation. It would not hurt to have a copy of your renewal application (to show you're compliant) just in case but not strictly necessary.

Your US Passport alone will suffice, you can travel by car or airplane, your choice. You don't need Canadian PR to travel or return to Canada.
