Translating and notarizing

I contacted an ATIO certified translator in Canada.

She said she could translate my document from Italian to English.
But she cannot notarize it.
Should I find someone that can do the translation as well as notarize it?
Is it enough that the translator is certified and therefore my translation will automatically be certified? (certified but not notarized)


Country specific (Sweden): "If your documents are not in English or French, send a notarized (certified) translation with a copy of the originals."

Guide 3999:
"Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
• the English or French translation; and
• an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
• a notarized (certified) copy of the original document.

I know that country specific takes precedence over generic instructions.
But it doesn't make sense to ask for a notarized copy of the original in one case and a notarized translation in another...

We called CIC and we tried to ask the CIC agent to clarify which is the correct way. They could not.
They did however send us this information in an email:

"Who can Translate Documents – Immigration Applications
If you are submitting an immigration application, the supporting documents you send must be in one of the official languages of Canada. Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:

• the English or French translation;
• an *affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
• a certified copy of the original document."

So it is still possible that the country specific information to notarize the actual translation is the correct way.
My guess is that the information is supposed to be the same on all places, but the country specific PDF has not been updated with the correct information.

I'm not a lawyer but it seems more likely to me that a copy of the original document should be notarized (certified).
Rather than certifying a translation, which is a copy of a copy.

I could continue speculating, but it becomes way to complicated and will muddy up what I've written.
I hope this will help other people however.
And I will let you know how it goes in a few months.

Only the copy of the original document should be notarized (if you are not sending original document). Just make sure the translation has the ATIO seal on it.
