As I understand it, the "third reading" is the final vote in the House of Representatives, where it is almost guaranteed to pass (due to the liberal majority), before it goes to the Senate. The Senate is the wildcard here, due to it having a conservative majority.

But a lot of people on here, with far greater knowledge than me on the workings of the Canadian political system, seem to think that the bill will have no problem in the Senate, and will be landing sometime soon on the Prime Minister's desk for him to sign it into law.

Agree with you. Hopefully it could be done very soon. Look forward to hearing when it takes effect.

are these the only amendments that will be discussed today? does that mean the reduction of the citizenship requirement has been rejected?

Bill C-6, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to another Act
In accordance with its Order of Reference of Monday, March 21, 2016, your Committee has considered Bill C-6, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to another Act, and agreed on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, to report it with the following amendments:
Clause 1
That Bill C-6, in Clause 1, be amended by adding after line 6 on page 3 the following:
“(13) Subsection 5(4) of the Act is replaced by the following:
(4) Despite any other provision of this Act, the Minister may, in his or her discretion, grant citizenship to any person to alleviate cases of statelessness or of special and unusual hardship or to reward services of an exceptional value to Canada.”
That Bill C-6, in Clause 1, be amended by adding after line 6 on page 3 the following:
“(13) Section 5 of the Act is amended by adding the following after subsection (3):
(3.1) For the purposes of this section, if an applicant for citizenship is a disabled person, the Minister shall take into consideration the measures that are reasonable to accommodate the needs of that person.”
Your Committee has ordered a reprint of Bill C-6, as amended, as a working copy for the use of the House of Commons at the report stage.

nobody knows yet. The bill was amended in a small part of it. It has to be reprinted and distributed with the report to the member of the parliament . The next step would be the minister ask for the third reading which is not scheduled yet. I think it should be within 15 days. The liberals understand how is this bill is important and they push it as possible as they can. The conservatives tried to stop it and keep changes done by Bill C-24 to minimize the number of new Canadians before the next federal elections. I am still susceptible about the power of senate to delay this bill. We have to write to all members of the senate just after Bill C-6 pass in the commons. Otherwise a movement to abolish the senate would strongly start.

Agreed with you surgi.

Senate can do alot to make it very slow as much as the can. So it wount be read as soon as possible in the parlment.

Bro, any idea if the 3-out-5-yrs citizenship application is included in this Bill C-6?
Hopefully it will start to become the law soon.
Thanks

Reducing the length of time someone must be physically present in Canada to qualify for Citizenship
To help immigrants achieve citizenship more quickly, the Government is proposing to reduce the time required to be spent in Canada for citizenship for adults to three years (1095 days) within the five years before applying for citizenship. This will mean applicants can apply one year sooner than they can now. This offers greater flexibility for immigrants who may need to travel outside of Canada for various personal or work reasons.

Currently, the Citizenship Act requires applicants to be physically present in Canada for four years (1,460 days) within the six years immediately before applying for citizenship.

Yes the 3 out of 5 is included in Bill C-6, but from what i understand the bill still has to go through several stages before it gets approved. So its too early to celebrate.

When will it reach the final stage?
So roughly end of this year it will be taken into effect?

Thx
