If you have done some research about Canada's healthcare system, you would already know that anything that is free comes with its terms and conditions. Free healthcare in Canada is no different. People have been waiting for years & years to be taken under a family doctor. The citizens are still waiting, so it goes without saying how much a newly landed immigrant new to the country has to wait to get a family doctor. Its near to impossible to get a family doctor, a cursory google search tells you that.

In Quebec, the problem is acute because of the lack of new doctors and many young doctors moving away from the province due lack of pay or policy issues in Quebec for their practice. The talented immigrant doctors are not allowed to practice anywhere in Canada, because their degrees are not accepted in Canada, though they get points in Express Entry. Once they land, they should find some other job. There is a saying that, if you are going to have a heart attack in Canada, it should be in a cab, because many cab drivers are doctors who immigrated, but cannot practice their profession because their doctoral degrees are not accepted.

But I am determined to find a family doctor somehow by employing many techniques that I can think of and documenting them in this thread, so that a new immigrant might find it useful.

Great initiative. I request other current Quebec residents to post their experience.

Shortage was severe few years back and seems to be improving.

During my short 13.5 months stay in Quebec I did not bother to find a family doctor. I already knew that it would be a wastage of time. Next to my building was a statcare ( walk-in clinic) and we used it heavily. Also worth mentioning is that few Family Doctors as well as Specialists hold Walk-in clinics 1-2 days per week and few specialist would see patients without referral from family doctor.

Regarding shortage govt has mandated that by 2017 85% Quebec residents should have family doctor by 2017 end ..so lets see how much they are able to live up to their words...

Yes, I have registered in that tool. Its a queuing system based on priority. You will be assigned a priority for allotment of doctors. If you currently have no severe health conditions, your priority will be low. Another priority is based on your residence location. I do not have much hopes for that 85%, because the ratio of doctors to residents is very low. I understand that many are moving away seeking greener pastures. I do hope the needy are given doctors faster. Healthy ones can wait. In NB province, the problem is more acute than Quebec.
