Hi everyone
First of all I am extremely sorry that I was not part of this forum for the last 2 months ... Congratulations for those who got their visas and best wishes to all my fellow members ... Guys I had landed in canada on dec 16th 2013.. I am living in Thompson rite now which is a small town in Manitoba .. I took jet airways flight from Delhi to Toronto via Brussels ... It was a nice experience with jet airways as we find good Indian food in flight .. And the crew was excellent too .. After landing in Toronto my next flight was Air canada after 4 hours .. This was my biggest mistake Bcoz we need to go through immigrations here ... Long que's everywhere .. I got priorities in que everywhere due to my lil daughter .. The immigration officer checked passports and copr for all of us .. She asked me how much money I m carrying .. And frankly speaking I carried $5000 only so I told her exact amount .. She took the address where they can send PR cards .. And finally after checking all my docs she said congratulations and welcome to Canada .. A big sigh of relief for me .. It's been almost 3 hours upto this process due to huge rush . I somehow managed to get my flight for Winnipeg and got another flight for Thompson from there .
The day I landed here it was -52 .. I can never imagine the severity of cold .. Guys don't bring too much clothes here if u r coming to this part of canada .. It's too cold here and indian winter clothes are not warm enough to bear this type of winters .. Moreover winters are almost over now .. Temp is rising slowly now .. But still it's too cold .. Inside apartments it's so warm here that we cannot take blankets and wear warm clothes .. So do carry some summer stuff to wear inside ur house ..
I went to service Canada office and applied for SIN cards .. It hardly took 15 mins they gave me SIN number on the moment and I got Cards for those in 10 days by post .. Same day I went to bank and opened a joint account for me and my wife . I filled medical form and sent it to Winnipeg for all of us which I got in 8 days ..

I stayed at my friends house for first 15. Days and rented an apartment for $900 per month .. In the beginning getting good jobs like we do in India is not easy .May be you guys will get sooner but In my case I had started a job at a store & side by side m looking for a good job too ..

I had also cleared my driving written test and road test :) and I will get my class 5 licence within days ..

Guys I don't know whether, what I am writing is relevant or not , but I just want to share my lil experience of 2 months .. Good wishes for all of you ..

Thanks and Regards
Deepak Katoch

Hi Deepak , thanks for sharing teh experience. I am also going to book tickets and will keep in mind to have atleast 5hrs time to catch the connection from Toronto. Is it sufficient time?
Also, at Toronto (port of entry) did they ask for the settlement funds for all the family members ? Did you carry any mutual fund, FD , traveler cheque etc to show the settlement funds?

Hi all.

At the time of immigration check (port of entry), is it necessary to show the settlement funds to the immigration officer? In my case the settlement fund is $16000 (for the family of 4). Do we need to carry the proof of the settelment funds? do they ask for that?

Thanks

Hi Deepak,

I also had a similar kind of question on Settlement funds. Is it mandatory to carry the amount we specified in our application?

Cheers,
