Hi there msmith1789,

The working holiday visa is known as the "international experience canada" visa.

The requirements are all online via this webpage if your girlfriend is from the UK. There will be a local CIC website for whatever country she is from if not.

I have already had one and it expired last June and I was too late to get a second one. If she has time left on her current visa, and I believe you said she does, then she can be eligible to extend. On the back of her paper visa stapled in her passport is a telephone number she can call. And if I remember rightly, the application has to be in at least 30 days prior to it expiring.

Once the paperwork/ application is in, she will then be on "implied status" meaning she carries on as normal, even when her current visa expires, until she hears back from the CIC.

I hope that helped. Are you guys here in Vancouver too? The new batch of IEC visas are going to be released imminently (in the next day or so) and I cannot wait.

Cheers!
Hi DavidMarsden38,

Yes, she is on a BUNAC working visa for one year. We will definitely go down that road anyway and inquire, as there would be nothing better than for her to stay working. Yes, she pretty much has 3 months today that her current visa will expire. We will call the number and find out.

That is definitely good to know!

Yes we are here in BC, we currently live in Abbotsford. We a re both British, dating since high school, and I currently have dual citizenship and have been doing the long distance relationship for last 5, almost 6 years! - finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! ;D

Yeah, BUNAC work visas are the IEC visas, they just take money to help find a job and help you understand the application. This year the entire process is online thank goodness.

Long distance isn't easy and we only did it for a year when I was finishing university in Brighton! Still, I think I would rather be waiting the process out here together than apart. so that I am thankful for.

I haven't made it to Abbotsford yet! I live downtown and actually just put an offer in on a condo in Gastown as was accepted yesterday. So this year with marriage, emigration and a mortgage, it will be a big year for us!

My interview date was changed because I made a silly mistake. When I got the email regarding my interview, I did not email back to confirm my attendance although they specified that in the message. Therefore, I wasn't scheduled for the interview yesterday. MAKE SURE YOU CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE by email as it specifies to avoid falling in my silly mistake.
Oh no!!! Feeling sorry for you. I did email them back just with the specific words they provided. But i did not write anything just reply to the email. Hope it will work but to be in safe side i will email again cofirming the interview.

Thanks a lot for your advise. When is your next interview date?

Ok, great. I though they were IEC visas after reading the info on the website.

Yes, we decided to take the leap and get together on a more permanent basis and put the savings from flying back and forth every 3-4 months into an apartment. Congratulations on your new move! Vancouver is a nice city, none quite like it with Stanley Park and the mountains and ski hills around.

There are definitely plenty of nice places for a wedding out here! - It does sound a big year for you! - Exciting!

I'm afraid I don't know, but I think that the VO dealing with your application may query why you are looking to obtain what is effectively 2 permanent residencies, as well as having your original citizenship. I don't know enough on the subject to know whether that's how it works, but it seems logical to me that they might question it. Ultimately, PR and ILR are not designed for future convenience of travel, and I don't think they'd like it!

Just my opinion though!
Thanks DGT, I have got the appointment for ILR but not for Tier1 General. It is hard to get the appointment for Tier1 general. If i post it will take at least 3 months. Meanwhile if London VO asks me for passport not sure what to do... it is been nearly 11 months my application with London VO. waiting for the decision.

Thanks again

I really wish I'd known that you could get 2 working holiday visa for Canada! I got my first one in 2005 and had to apply for a LMO for my second year(I'm sure it was different then and u weren't aloud 2 or maybe I just didn't know?)
But more to the point I would have totally applied for one just now:(
My husband leaves Glasgow a week on Tuesday so I have to wait it out here. For how long who knows... I applied in October, and my medicals expire on march 24th.
I'm hoping to be done by may! Is this realistic?
In the mean time any tips on how to handle long distance relationships? I met my husband in 2005 and we must have spent 1/2weeks in total apart since.

It's really tough being apart. My wife and I had 9 months apart (many, many years ago now!) when we were living together in Australia. i was studying there, and had to finish off the last 8 months on my own as it was not worthwhile for her to buy a $12000 dollar (that's right, $12000!!!) visa. In a way, I was looking forward to a bit of freedom (we were just dating at the time, not married)! As it turned out, it was the most excruciating period of my life. I was a wreck when she left. I cried so much that I couldn't even talk for a good half hour in the airport (and I am not a crying man! That was the last time I cried, 5 years ago!). However, it was at this point that I knew that I wanted to marry her. Without a shadow of a doubt, I did not want to be without her ever again. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is keep your chin up and take comfort from the fact that this too shall pass, and it will make your relationship stronger than ever. Just talk as much as you can!

As for the wait time, it's anyone's guess but I think May is a very conservative estimate, and that it should be sooner. London are picking up a bit and seem to be working on applications a month or two behind us. So fingers crossed!

Are you from Glasgow by the way? If so, me too!

Hi DJT,
Thanks for the reply. I finished work late last night and couldn't sleep, which seems to be the case a lot these days. Sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed, and last night was 1 of those nights.
I am indeed from Glasgow. What part of Canada you moving to?

Michelle.

I know the feeling Michelle. I have nightmares about this stuff pretty much every night! It's not a nice feeling to have control of your life taken away! My wife and I are actually already in Toronto. She's from Nova Scotia (she's more Scottish than me family-wise!). We'd been living in the West End of Glasgow for about 4 years. She was really sad to have to leave but we're just seeking a better life over here, and to be closer to her family since mine have all moved on now. Where are you headed to?

The longer you are apart the harder the distance is. My husband is in Canada and I am in Scotland and it is hard!!!!! However, being apart can be good for a relationship, in short bursts. My husband and I have been in a relationship for 5 years living in seperate countries, it has only been the last 2 years that we have been married when things started to get really tough. I'm just HOPING that we don't have much longer to wait. If you ever need any moral support feel free to Inbox me!
