Hi,
Today my ECAS profile changed my home address to Canada but is still showing as "In Process" does this mean there's been some progress and the ECAS is just lagging or am I getting excited over nothing????
Any idea's how long the wait will be for the actual COPR from this point?

Thanks
Jim.

So has anyone else found it really hard to get a job?

Being a computer programmer I was hoping to carry on in the same vein, but all those jobs are down in Toronto which is too far a commute for me. I'm literally applying for everything right now and I just can't get a break.

I had an interview with Pita Extreme last week and they called me back to say I didn't get the job. I can't even get a job making sandwiches lol.

I don't know if lack of Canadian experience is an issue, or if it's the fact I've only ever worked in computers. It sucks though, we really need the money, and I'm getting restless being at home 24/7.

I'm in the bar trade. 6 years of experience as a General Manager of a multi million pound business. I couldn't even get a job bussing tables for a lack of Canadian Experience. It's really, really tough...

I'm having the same problem! Left Glasgow on a good wage as a manager in a bar/restaurant, I've been applying for everything and anything also....I started as a part-time liquor store clerk....like 2 shifts a week! I suppose though I can use my staff discount to drown my sorrows ;)
A jokes aside.....how the hell am I gonna help pay rent?

I had a great job lined up for a place that was opening in April, on the assumption that i'd be able to work by then. But, that plan was scunnered as i've just hit the 7 month mark!

But yeah, it's really tough. I don't know exactly what they think is so different about working in Canada compared to the rest of the world, and quite frankly i've had very little but appalling service here for the most part. Everything is based on looks here. You pretty much have to be an attractive female to get work in bars and restaurants. Being neither female, nor attractive, makes it pretty unlikely that i'll find anything. Probably end up working in a Tim's once/if I get my COPR.

I worked at Bacchus on Glassford street, was there 4 years. I loved it there! Most of the customers were regulars and at the weekend it was super busy and we always had a laugh behind the bar....I would just like to find that here!?
I'm finding my accent to be a big problem here, and I may add I don't have a thick one.
I lived in Banff for 2 years when I was 19(also met my husband) and I had a great response from being Scottish and got a job with staff accommodation within 3 days...
I've had people think I'm French here ffs!
I've only been here 3 weeks, but I've been looking for work since before I got here!
I have an interview tomorrow so we'll see how that goes....

Ah nice! I worked at The Chip on Ashton Lane for about 4 years, then I managed Cottiers for a few years after that. I find the accent to be an issue too. I do have a fairly thick Glasgow accent which seems to be an issue for many people. Honestly don't think I'm gonna find the work that I need here. I'm not cool enough to work in Toronto I guess.

So... I'm going to Canada this summer for a couple of weeks, and when there I'm marrying my Canadian fiancee..
When I land, should I say Im going over to get married or might this be an issue? I'll have lots of wedding things in my suitcase, so should it be checked, it's going to be very obvious that's why I'm going over..

As much as I wouldn't wish it on anyone, I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling to find any work. It can't help that all the school kids are kicking out this time of year and are looking for summer jobs.

Talking of working for Tim's, I've applied to 3 separate ones and haven't heard anything back from any of them.

You should tell them. I'll be honest, I didn't tell them I was arriving to get married. It's not nice to feel that months of organizing and thousands of dollars hinge on the whim of the border officer standing in front of you.

Although I did the opposite, I'd advise not lying or holding any information back from the officer.

A few tips:

  • Are you employed currently? Ask your employer to write a letter stating that you're still employed with them and the date that they're expecting you back.
  • If you're currently paying a mortgage or renting, bring proof of that.
  • Make sure you book a return ticket.
  • Bring a copy of your travel insurance showing that it expires when you're due to return (assuming you're not on an annual plan)

Honestly, even without all of this stuff, you'd be fine as long as you're straight with the officer (coming from the UK, anyway). Best not to leave anything to chance though.
