However it seems that CIC asking for your passport is not directly a DM, as I had suspected.

PPR is most definitely not DM. Though not common, there have been cases of apps refused after the passport was sent.

We are living in Canada, but filed an out of land application via the London office.
We filed our application on 11 Mar 2015
On 13 May 2015 my wife was approved as a sponsor, and the file was passed to the London office.
And that's the story so far.

Click on "Profile" right on the top to your right. Then Click "Email Notifications" Under Modify Profile to your left.

Or in the actual thread, there's a little navy blue bubble at the top and bottom of the page that says Reply | Notify | Send this Topic | Print... if ou click Notify, it will say "do you want to turn off notificationsf or this thread" and then you're sorted.
