Yes it is typical.
Nothing is set in stone as everyone has a different application, times vary.
If the application is plain and simple and it arrives in London, you can expect to wait with no information other than, "application received on xxxxx" and "Medical received".
After about 10 - 12 weeks from when London received your application, eCAS usually adds "decision made" (sadly it does not tell you what the decision is), then you can expect an email or a letter. I have not heard of many people that get "in progress" updates, but this depends on the officer dealing with your case.
