We crossed the finish line: Yesterday my husband got up at 4am and drove from east of Toronto to Buffalo, to be there before the office opened at 7:30am. After a short wait he had his paperwork in hand and crossed the border - Landed - a few hours later. He was home by early afternoon. All in all, it was relatively painless! His official Perm Res card will arrive in the mail soon; until then he has a piece of paper evidence his status. He went and applied for a SIN straight away (someone is anxious to rejoin the land of the gainfully employed!)
One crazy story that I must relay - the guy in line at the Buffalo consulate in front of my husband had his approved permanent residency paperwork that you need to have before you do your Landing, and was asking for a copy of his application file. The paperwork is only valid for a year or some number of months, during which time you need to enter Canada and formally Land and get your PR visa. Otheriwse it expires. Well for some unfathomable reason, this guy had been hanging onto his paperwork and hadn't landed for so long that his approval expired!!!! Who does that??! Who applies for PR, gets approved, and then doesn't enter the country? WTF? It made me think of all the heartbroken folks on this forum separated from their partners, who are still waiting in process, and this guy takes up valuable bureaucrat time to process an Application that he doesn't even follow through on. Grr. Well, the good thing (not for him) is that apparently he was told that he had to start the whole process all over again!! They said they didn't have a copy of his file for him to resubmit, so he is back at square one.
best of luck to everyone,
Beantown
