The federal government is seeking public feedback on letting some immigration applicants pay more for faster processing.

That idea is one of many put forward in an online consultation document the government is asking members of the public to fill out as it gears up for an overhaul of the immigration processing system.

The NDP’s immigration critic and a pair of Liberal and NDP MPs say bringing in a two-tiered Canadian immigration system is out of the question.

“I wouldn’t support it,” said NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East, B.C.). “By doing that, effectively you’re saying you can buy your way into the system and bypass everybody.”

“They’re absolutely creating a two-tiered system if that were to proceed,” she said.

Re: The Liberal government is thinking about processing richer applicants faster

It used to take 2 years or more for citizenship application, the fees was $200 now the fees is $630. If you ask the new applicants who got their citizenship under 1 yr after paying $630 to pay $200 and wait in vain or $630 and get it under 1 yr, what do you think the majority will say?.
Realistically some or many applicants hire or can hire the lawyers and consultants hoping their applications to be processed faster, I don't mention the travel expenses to visit their families.
Honestly I can pay whatever I can afford to BUY the visa of my wife. It's not because I am rich but because I can afford it. The idea is not bad at all if the fees are affordable.

money was never an issue for me. i'd give my life for my family, so what's a few hundred bucks extra if it means we can be reunited faster? to be honest, if there had been a two tier system when i applied, i would've opted for the more expensive option. no question about it.

here's my one and only concern though... supposing they implement this two tiered system in the fall, what happens to the applicants who have already submitted their applications and have their files sitting at an overseas visa office waiting to be processed? do they get the option to expedite or do they get stuck in the bottom tier? will the bottom tier applicants be forced to wait longer as top tier applicants continually jump ahead of the queue, pushing older applicants further back?

As I gave you an almost similar example above, I know some people who paid $200 for citizenship just few months before it becomes $630, I can say that it positively affected their applications as they were approved quicker than anticipated. I am sure An agent cannot delay your application based on the fees you paid(given it was a right fee at the time of application). The residual applications of those who paid less will benefit from the increased number of the agents. So let's hope for the best, I am sure it won't create two classes.

They have this option if applying in the UK as I know someone who did it.

This is something my spouse and I have spoken about. If there was a fast-track option, we would have definitely paid extra for it.

that would be ok. i just don't want them to create a situation where their staff is continually occupied with processing fast tracked applications whilst lacking the resources to keep the non fast tracked applications moving along.

fall isn't too far away, so yeah, let's wait and hope for the best.

What happens when everyone pays the extra fee? If they can speed it up then speed up!

i'm guessing the majority of newer applicants most likely will pay the extra fee. the only situations where i can imagine someone opting for the lower fee would be cases where the spouses are already living together comfortably.
