test on 20th feb..please help

Hi guys
I am going to write IELTS test on 20th Feb, 2010. I am facing few problems in the writing section,the first thing confusing me is the essay writing. I am confused in the argument essay writing,should i agree with the situation or disagree with the situation? or i can do both,agree and disagree in the essay?

Though I have not taken IELTS but I have taken GMAT and TOEFL and they also follow the same pattern,It's upto you to decide which side you want to take.You could agree if you could write more and substantiate with examples if not then you can go against it and again give few example whey u went against it.

Or

You can take one side such as agreeing and then you can talk about other side such as disagreeing from others point of view..


For example,

Walmart's practices are good
If you agree say yes and start writing about it,once you have written then you can say "whereas others(people who disagree with the statement) would say that walmart practices are not good becasue they do not pay their employees as much as costsco pay,hence they are not good

I am not sure whether I am making myself clear to you.

There are some videos on utube which explain in detail how to write these essays. Just write them along with tutor and apply the concept to 2-3 essays and you should be good.

1. Introduce the topic and state your stand, whether you agree or disagree.
2. Give arguments in support of your viewpoint supported by relevant examples.
3. State the contrary viewpoint and give reasons why you don't agree with it.
4. Conclude with a short concluding paragraph.
5. If there is time left at the end, revise your answers and correct any spelling or grammatical mistakes.

Follow this pattern and you will never get lost.

In addition, after introducing the topic in the first paragraph, also include, say a short sentence, reflecting a story you had in the past that you can relate to the topic and that would support your stand on the issue, be it against or for. This will help add word counts to your essay.

then for the rest, follow the pattern as stated above by the other poster.


Lastly, your story does not need to be a true story. You can make up your own story as long as it will allow you to write more about it.

There is no right or wrong stand/opinion in the writing part of IELTS. You will be graded based on your ability to convey your ideas cohesively through writing and with the use of correct grammar of course.
