I hope someone is able to help me here.
I had applied for a study permit extension and my visa just got approved but they gave a temporary resident visa till July. I don’t understand why would they turn my study permit application into a temporary resident visa.
I am just worried about the fact that will I be able to work now? My official document is still waiting to be mailed to me.
Why would this happen? Has this happened to anyone else before?

I am not an international student of Canada but the general procedure all countries maintain is as follows,
Study Visa / Temporary Resident Visa - The sticker that you find on your passport when it arrives you is the TRV which allows you to enter canada. -

Study Permit, - you will get is an approved letter, which guides you to take this letter with you, buy your ticket, and once you arrive at the Port Of Entry (POE) of Canada, you will meet the visa officer and he/she will give you the formal Study Permit, which is a letter size neat paper stapled on your passport after verifying your TRV , LOA, Medicals and GIC / funds.

Here's a link to an article if you only believes it from an internet article rather from a stranger

.
Hope this clarifies your concern

So the TRV is redundant unless you were planning to leave and re-enter Canada during your study permit validity. They issue those TRVs for extensions, and for PGWP holders.
