Temporary Residency To Student. Take The Risk?

Hi guys Thanks to all Helpful people on this forum. I really Appreciate the help. my question is I am going to apply for student permit. I am currently on Temporary Residence Status. But before applying to student permit my question is that on my temporary status it says:

Conditons:
1. Unless Authorized, Prohibited From Engaging In Employment In Canada.

Remarks/ Observations:
Temporary Resident Status Restored As Per R182. Accompanying Dad on Work Permit Valid To Same Date. Temporary Resident Status Maintained as per R182. Authorized to Attend Primary or Secondary School.

(My dad is U.S Citizen and he came to Canada and opened a Business. We are all here Under NAFTA)

My Question Is that my temporary status is valid for 2 more years until 2018. before expiry date we always renew it and extend it. so my question is if i apply for Student Permit. Will it affect my Temporary Status? will it deactivate my stay until 2018? Also on my Permit it says i am authorized to attend primary or secondary school. Is it possible for me to add Post-Secondary into it?

Thanks A lot In Advance. I have learned a lot from this Forum. Very knowledgeable People. Thanks a lot for your time. I really Appreciate it. :)

Hi r3dalert,

You must apply for a study permit for post-secondary studies. Even high school students with study permits must apply for a new study permit before continuing on to post-secondary studies.

You can hold multiple permits at the same time; applying for a different type of temporary resident status does not automatically cancel the other status.

Best,
Matthew

Hi,
it won't affect your temporary visa as when you apply for student visa, you apply for the temporary visa as well(although, thats typically for non visa exempt countries) but regardless, temporary visa and student visa , are both two different things.
Plus, sadly you cannot add post secondary to that list.

Hi kamal i just want to make sure that i have been living in Canada for 10 years on Temporary Residency status. In 10 years i was renewing and extending my permit i fear that once i convert to student permit for post secondary and in future when its 2018 i wont be able to renew my temporary status visa for another 2 years. I want to make sure before taking the step. maybe someone in similar experience?

How old are you? Actually - how old will you be when the visa expires in 2018?There's a limit to how long you can keep piggy-backing off your father's status and extending it based on his status in Canada. At some point you'll no longer be classified as a dependent (due to your age) and will be on your own from a visa perspective one way or another.

I am on implied status . Every time i go to consultants or lawyers they don't understand it. I have no choice but to study and i am not sure if it will guarantee me P.R

That's interesting that you've been allowed to continue to extend your status - even at your age.

Anyway - to answer your question, no - studying in Canada certainly won't guarantee PR. To give yourself the best chance of obtaining PR, you should take a course that's at least two years in length so that you secure a three year PGWP. Additionally, it would be better to take a university degree rather than a diploma. Good luck.

No Express Entry points for completing high school in Canada (you only get points for post secondary education) or for living 10 years in Canada. No Express Entry points for the business either.

Understand that CIC does change the structure of immigration programs from time to time. So my answer is based on the current points system. It may be different a few years from now. Having said that, I think it's safe to assume you won't get points for either your secondary school education or your 10 years living in Canada.
