temporary move to canada for 12mths

hi,
I am planning on working in Canada for 12 months. I want to have the working visa ready as soon as I get off the plane. I am married to a Canadian. If she sponsors me offshore, will the processing time take 12months or is it quicker? Do I automatically get a workpermit if she sponsors me? I am over 35 and a professional.

***Note that you've posted in the US section of the forum but I believe you're Australian. Are you a US citizen as well? Important to clarify that.***

If she sponsors you offshore (outland) - no open work permit. To qualify for an open work permit, you must submit an inland application. For that, both of you must be in Canada and it will take approximately four months for the open work permit to be issued after you submit the application.

If you want to have a work permit right off the plane, you would need to go the closed work permit route. To get a closed work permit, you need a full time job offer from an employer in Canada and that employer needs to obtain an approved LMIA (4-6 month process).

In reference to the two options:

- so if I take up this option, what visa would I need to apply for to come to Canada for the year? would it just be a visitor visa? and how long will this take? Do I then apply for the open work permit when we both get to Canada?

You would apply for an ETA to come to Canada. This is effectively a visitor visa for people who are from a visa exempt country.

Once you are both physically in Canada, you would submit an inland sponsorship application and include an open work permit. The open work permit will be granted approximately four months after the entire application package is received. Again, you both need to be physically in Canada before you can submit the application - also, you must submit the inland sponsorship application together with the OWP.
