Can anyone help discuss with me just what temporary insurance is, what could be the best plan for me, and if I can get it during my wait here? Most insurance such as Blue Cross says I have to apply 30 days after arriving in Canada. Well I have been here for a year and a half so I am a bit late for that. Is there anyone that would let me apply after being here so long? Also, if I already have hospital bills from last year and buy temporary insurance, can it cover the costs?

I am just afraid that anything can happen within now and the time I get AIP so I want to be on the safe side. Could someone recommend some good/affordable companies? If it helps I am on implied status right now and currently residing in Newfoundland. I will answer any questions you have.

I looked into Manulife Flexcare for my son, the basic package is around $25 a month.

Me and my relatives used temporary medical insurance from DAN PUCHER. We used for several travel to other countries for shorter durations. Try their terms.

I got temporary medical insurance with Blue Cross Quebec. And it was less expensive because I had already had the immigration medical exam, so I would make sure when you inquire (with any company) to ask if there is a discount for having done that. I would also tell them you have submitted your inland spousal/common law sponsorship app and are awaiting AIP. I had been in Canada a year (on a work permit) when I called to get coverage and got 6 months of coverage with Blue Cross Quebec. It was fine because I had coverage up to that point with a US insurance company. If you get coverage as a "visitor" or as an "immigrant", there might be different lengths of time that are possible for coverage in each category and different prices, so I would just tell them your situation and ask for various possibilities that could work for you, so you can evaluate what is best in your situation. And I called about 4 different companies to compare rates, and chose that one that was least expensive for me. It was about $700-ish for 6 months of coverage. The other companies I called were more. Some plans charge per day, and other plans are purchased by time intervals. I would also ask about how the renewal process works if you need to purchase more coverage in case your AIP takes longer than you expected, and inquire if you can be reimbursed if you have not used the plan and get AIP before your plan expires. (Blue Cross Quebec will reimburse you for the remaining time, if you have not used it during the entire time.) Another factor to consider is the amount you will be covered for if something happened: some insurance plans only cover up to 50,000$ of coverage, while others go up to 150,000$.

excellent information thanks

did they asked for or wanted to know if there was any previous medical conditions before insuring you

Yes, they asked if I had been to see a doctor in the last three months and what it was for (then they said that if I had a re-occurrence of that, it would not be covered in this coverage). I think they also asked a few other questions about medical history, but I don't really remember.

Im using until i will become a quebec resident www.worldnomads.com you are covered around the world except your own country for all medical conditions (medicines, cures, doctor visits) due to ilnesses & accidents and eventual emergency flights etc etc. It costs me around 87 euros a month(120 dollars)

My boyfriend used Cooperators Visitor Policy. We paid $730 for 10 month. It covers 50,000 in medical/hospital ect.

Thanks for posting this Love.. im also looking into this from last weekend.
Try coverme.com and also sunlifefinancial. . Am debating between those 2 and bluecross.. ive been here for almost a year and i know i definitely need this!..

You are so welcome dear. I hope it helps others as well especially those in our situation having to go longterm without medical coverage. We can't take too many risks during our wait.

Thank you for the suggestions and all the posts in here are tremendously helpful beyond belief. Me and the hubby have been discussing things but don't know when we will actually get it. Probably after Christmas as money is too tight right now. Just hope I don't get hurt before then. ;)
