Hi all,

I and my husband landed as PR in Canada in March, 2010. I just stayed for three days and then returned to USA on H1B.
I have not applied for SIN in Canada. However my husband continued working in Canada.

Now when we file for taxes, do I need to report my income from USA.
If so, does it have to be only from March.
do I need to pay differences in taxes?
Any deductions that I can take.

Thanks a lot.

Taxation in Canada depends on residency. If you have "residential ties" to Canada during the period you earned the U.S. income then yes, you need to report it to Revenue Canada and pay taxes on it (if any are owing). "Residential ties" is a bit of an amorphous concept, but the fact that your husband was in Canada during the time in question may be enough to make your income taxable. I think you can ask Revenue Canada for a ruling. There are a number of foreign tax credits you can use on both sides of the border to reduce any tax burden.
