Hi All,

I was in Canada in last 5 years of my citizenship period but I lived not more then 100 days in initial 2.5 years and had no income so my CA says that I am not subject to pay any income tax. But the citizenship form asks about the tax information fro last 5 years. I have said no in the application will it call for some issues? Anyone has experienced something similar?

Thanks,

In my spouse’s case she was not employed for around 6-8 months I totally when she arrived to Canada. She was not required to file income tax (since no T4 was applicable for her), but she filed the tax which was assessed (NoA) for the first year

Why did you answer "no"? They need your consent to access your tax information. It doesn't matter if you live in Canada or not, worked or not, you should file your taxes every year.

Every country has a different Tax treaties with Canada. The rule with India is that one need to live in Canada for 183 days or more to be liable for to file tax even with no income. But If some one lived less than 183 with no Canadian income does not need to fine any tax in Canada. This is based on my reading of CRA treaties and discussion with CPA. This is the reason I didn't file for taxes. And I had renewed my PR cards based on just filing tax for 1 year. But I was concerned as citizenship might be different ball game.

Ordinarily, meeting tax filing obligations (option 1) means that the applicant has filed tax returns, though there may be instances where they did not file in a given year because they were not required to do so under the Income Tax Act (e.g., they did not meet the minimum income threshold). If they have a SIN or alternate identifier and did not file taxes because they were not required to do so, they still meet the income tax filing requirement for citizenship.

As mentioned in my post, She did file the taxes that year
She was not required to file income tax (since no T4 was applicable for her)

i was referring to this ^ i think she's always required to file taxes.
