Hey guys. I was on H1b, moved to Canada in April 2021. I was resident for tax purposes in 2020. I am assuming I am resident for tax purposed in US for 2021 as I had significant presence in US for last 3 years. Now, in Canada, Am I a resident or non resident for tax purposes? I have canadian income now. No US income anymore. I am getting all this bank requests for my SSN from US because I added my US phone number to bank details(dumb mistake).
Do you mean the Canadian banks are requesting for your SSN because you used US phone number? Because when you opened your bank accounts in US they would have asked for SSN anyway right?

Wow that's news! Thanks for posting this here. I was planning to retain and use my US phone number as well, but now I should not!
For your other query, I think you will be a resident for Tax purposes in both USA and Canada for year 2021, because you will be in Canada for > 6 months in 2021.

Retain your number and put it in Google voice to maintain US accounts. Just don't give out your Us phone number in Canada.

I did some digging around. The US SSN is usually for American citizens who migrate to Canada and don't report their income, the bank does it for them. As I am resident for just this year. I did not think reporting lifetime worth of my income to IRS is needed. So I provided all the banks that I don't have any SSN lol.

Hi!
I have the same scenario as you. What did you end up doing? Did you file US return as resident alien? and What about Canada return for 2021, did you file as resident or non-resident?

I filed as resident for tax purpose in US. Also as a resident in Canada. I just checked the box that I had no income out of canada while filing through simple tax, this is because after becoming Canadian resident, I had no US income.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I also have no US income after moving to Canada as resident. Did you report your Canadian income on US return as well or just reported the income which you earned in the US. I have been reading conflicting information where people say they report global income if filing as resident alien in US.

No, I did not report Canadian income on US returns. As I am not citizen, I did not feel the need to. US citizens get taxed in US even after they move out of country lol. As we are small fish, they don't care about our foreign income.

Haha! You are right, we are small fish in the ocean. Also not sure if you encountered this, were you getting the option of claiming covid relief fund ($1400). Since we received only small US income in 2021, we are eligible to claim that as refund as we are filing as resident aliens.

Oh ok..haha! I didn't receive that back in 2021 because I think they based that on 2020 earnings. But since my earnings for 2021 is low, so I think I am eligible now to claim that.
Yes. It was dependant on 2020 income. If you hadn't filed for 2020, it was dependant on 2019 income. I waited until I got 1400 and then filed 2020 income tax return.

Very happy to have found this thread!
I moved from US(H1B) to Canada(PR) in Oct 2021. I quit my US job before moving so essentially zero ties to the US. I understand I will need to file as a resident in the US because of how long I lived there and moved in the tail end of 2021. My questions are -

1. Do I need to declare my Canada income anywhere in the US tax filing? I barely have $200 earned in Canada in 2021. (Confused about this because I wasn't a US citizen or GC holder and not sure what H1B's need to do...)

2. Is using turbotax simple enough or do I need to spring for a cross-border accountant or something?

3. Am I a resident in Canada for tax purposes? (entered as PR but in Oct 2021, started earning only in Dec 2021)

How have you guys been filing? Basic W2 only..
