Hello
I am moving from UK to Canada and I am taking about CAD5,000 cash and CAD8,000 traveller cheque. I would like to know as a source of this fund/ or proving this is my own money what document I shall take. is the bank statement is ok, if for how many months bank statement I shall take with me.
any advice please.

Hi d2013,
A general point to start of with. If you bring more than gbp 10k you will have to declare this at UK border when you fly out. When you land in canada you should declare if you are bringing in around more than cad 10k (pls check this on the net as I'm not 100% what the limit is- It may actually be cad 15k).
Your proof will be anything showing the conversion from gbp to canadian dollars. So keep your receipt from the bank/bureau de change if you are using them. You can also show your bank statement showing the money debiting your account to pay for foreign exchange but if you have receipts i dont don't nk you need bank statements.

I take it you won't be staying long in canada and will be returning to uk after a few weeks/1month? I say this because the amount you are taking is not really enough.
When you open your canadian bank account you will have to keep a minimum balance of3-5k. If you dont, you have to pay a monthly bank fee of $30.
If you do go back to uk, I would recommend opening (and keeping it open) a canadian bank account. This will help you when you finally transfer all your uk money to canada. For this, a quick and very cheap way is to use foreign exchange brokers. I used halo financial brokers. Brokers are usually better when you transfer more than 10k. To use them you need to be able to provide a canadian bank account to which the money will be transferred to.

Hope the above helps. :)

It's CAD $10,000
