Hi,

Please see my timeline...Hubby just received PR card (about 7 weeks after landing). Despite cultural and religious differences, 5-year age difference, and very short courtship (5 months), he was granted the visa almost 5 months after. Although they would deny it, I believe that CIC/VO also takes factors, such as age, educational background, and work experience into consideration. Feel free to ask questions!!

Keep positive and good luck to all!

I just want to share my story here. MY hubby and I applied for a family sponsorship in August 2012. After all was said and done. (Changing my last name to his last name and updating all my documents including the PR application in the middle of it. So I thought it would extremely delay it but it didn't.) I landed exactly a year later August 2013. So of course I was still not contented until I have the PR card in my hands. So at the point where I was suppose to get PR card (Nov 2013), I got a letter from them saying that my picture did not meet the criteria. Which annoyed me very much because the VO checked it and did not have an issue with it. On top of that they did not give me a reason why or how to fix it. Also, they sent a form saying I gave the wrong height and to confirm it. Who does that? Power trip much? Obviously the height on the application was from the doctors office. Was I lying to make myself look taller? hahaha!

After all the waiting and delay for me to live my life. New SIN and everything I needed to do because I don't have the PR card. I finally received it in February 2014, That's right 4 months of waiting for a freaking card. lol and now I am back to school and starting a diploma program in the Fall!!!! Not to mention an amazing job!! :)

My advice? PATIENCE! Being proactive, don't be afraid to send an explanation letter when corresponding to the VO. Don't forget to put your application number, UCI and signatures on those letters. VO's are only human if you write them and explain what is happening without being aggressive or angry they will eventually try to help you or fix it. They are not your enemies only people that re doing their jobs as well.

God bless everyone!!!!! :)

Congrats on having pass through immigration and have win the battle! :) I just read your post and maybe you can help me.
I've got DM a month ago, now waiting for landing letter from Montreal's office.
Like you, I change my name to hubby's last name when we got married, but I didnt wanted to mess up immigration so the only document I didnt updated was my passport. (I updated my country's national id doc and is the law that all my other docs will automaticlly change to the name appearing on the national id as soon as i renew them, so i renew my driver's license and it appears now with hubbys name) but i just thought it will be a huge issue trying to update my passport during the waiting, cuz i will have to wait for it to be renewed at my country (which takes around 45 days) and then mail cic a new copy of it and blah blah blah.. i just didnt wanted to to anything that will mess up my application.
So now that im waiting to land... i am thinking.. should i risk updating my passport now? a month has pass and Montreal's office has not contacted me yet... should I go land anyway with my old passport, explain them the situation and hope they will check my country's id and use that name?
I did call cic regarding this matter, and the agent told me that if I explain the situation to the VO, they will clearly use my married name, plus, since the beginning of my application, cic has been mailing me in my married name (regardless of my un-updated passport....

Do you have any advice to give me? did you contact cic when you change your name? in which stage did you do it?
Please let me know :) Thanks!!

Good luck and God bless to all!

Good luck and God bless to all!

I changed my name after my medical just before the DM. I just sent an explanation letter and copy of the passport and marriage certificate to the CIC directly and after 2-3 weeks when I checked my IQAS it was updated cause I was able to log in using the married last name. I also had to wait for my updated passport. It took me 3 months. 1 month for appointment to get a passport and 2 months to receive it. It actually delayed me for 2-3 weeks as people who had the same timelines as me were already getting DMs in May and I got mine in June. I thought it was worth it because I was trying to avoid exactly what you are going through right now and now all my documents are in my married name. My suggestion is to not risk anything at this point. As far as I know if you want to use a PR card that was in the maiden name and you have an updated passport in the married name, All you have to do is carry a marriage certificate when you travel. Along with the old passport with maiden name (safety precaution). I think that if you wanted to change passports you should have done it earlier in the application and now it will be just better for you to land on whatever passport you used to apply.

Now I'm so confused as to why the CIC has been contacting you with the married name. All I know for sure is that the CIC will ONLY follow whatever name is written on the passport and nothing else. At landing they will look at your passport and compare that with the COPR (certificate of permanent residence) and everything has to match.

At the time of landing it will be very hard for the VO's to change anything that is already in the COPR, as far as I know it was pre-filled for them and all they do is print it out and confirm the information within it. It looks like it is not their jobs or they are not even allowed to change anything in it but I could be wrong.

So yeah don't risk screwing it up at this point. You file will probably now be in the local office and not the case processing centre so your letter might get lost or confuse someone.

You know you can eventually apply for a new PR card to change it to a married name but you will have to pay for it. And that is more waiting.
Just a note COPR name will NEVER be changed because it is a historical document.

Hope that helps! :)

thanks so much for sharing here marsiangal :P :P :P :P

hoping for more success applicant to join here :P :P :P
