I got LOA for a one-year postgraduate programme. The programme includes 1-semester co-op + 2-semester study. My first question is, do I need to get a study visa for 9 months + 3 months work visa, or should I get a study visa for 12 months and additional working visa? My second question is, when I am applying for PGWP, does it count as one year or 9 months? Thank you

You need a study permit and a co-op work permit to do your co-op. Co-op permit is for co-op only you cant use it for regular work, you must have a co-op permit when doing coop.

When you apply for study permit there is a section about work being a required component of your studies so if you fill that you can get both sp & co-op permit at once. You can also apply for co-op permit once in Canada, but you must have it before the co-op part ofoprogram can start.

Thank you so much.
So my study permit should be 12 months instead of 9 months right?
I am asking this question in order to understand duration of PGWP and the work permit that my husband will get during my study?

i have same question my program is 4 months full time and 4 months placement.

Also when certificate is awarded after completion does it say one year or 8 months.

unable to get the answer anywhere

Ur program would be of 2 semesters in which 1 Is regular while the 2nd one is of co op. On ur offer letter actual completion date is written and if it is not there contact ur school because IRCC require that.
In most of the cases 2 semesters made one academic year that result in 1 year pgwp.
In Canadian education system one year is divided into 3 semesters some schools take semesters back to back while other give a break of 1 semester after 2 semesters that is official completion of 1 academic year.
If u really want a confirmation on this from ur schol write a mail to them.
All the best

Thank you Akshay,

What do you mean by "Offer Letter" ?

But the program says 8 month training program still you think this shall qualify for one year.Yes have written to the department

Offer letter is an official confirmation that states that u are offererd for admission and eligible for further processes like fee paying and all.
I am not getting ur point is ur programme is of 2 semesters 4 months training or 3 semesters 8 months training?

Lol!!!Perhaps i confused you.

Its a 8 month program.4 months in class and 4 months placement.

So basically its a 8 month cousre which has 2 semesters that lead to 1 academic year and result in 1 year pgwp in most of the cases like 90% cases. For which college u r applying to?

even if its a training program ?

Ryerson..Law practice program.
So basically the. Programme has no theoretical part,, for the first 4 months they teach u by practical knowledge and latter 4 months they place u at workplace.
I am not sure if such programme is eligible for work permit u have to check with university
All the best

Your offer letter from the University will have the start and expected end date of the program. You'll get stay-back based on that.
