Study permit refused

Hi, everyone!

I received bad news yesterday- my study permit was refused. The reason they stated is that they are not convinced that I will leave Canada after my studies, because "it is not credible" that I want to do a Social Work Diploma when I already have a BA Hons (Psychology).

But I want to study social work! And the reason why I want to start from scratch, is that the Canadian laws, socio-economic environment, etc are totally different from those of South Africa and Botswana, so to me it makes sense to study them from scratch.

I would also never stay in Canada illegally- I have a son to think about and would never even consider doing something like that. I just though that this would be a wonderful opportunity to experience life in Canada and receive an excellent qualification.

But what now? Is there anything I can do- appeal, apply again, anything? I would really appreciate any help!

Sorry to hear that, my application also refused 2 times. Write a strong SOP and prepare more documentation. and apply again.

Did you have a letter / statement of purpose with your application?

They mentioned, because my sister living in Canada and I have sponsorship application with her. I will not leave Canada after my study.

You mention these reasons for wanting to start from scratch in your SOP

Thanks for all the advice- I really appreciate that!

I did not supply a SOP with my application- I didn't even know about it. So I am going to apply again, with a SOP explaining everything and with as much extra information as possible. I just wish I knew exactly what they wanted!

My husband and I are also going to try the express entry- hopefully we'll be successful with something.

It is just so frustrating, sometimes it looks as if their requirements are so contradictory. For example, one of the things they look at if you immigrate is how adaptable you will be, then having friends or family in Canada counts in your favour, but it counts against you if you apply for a study permit. They also give extra points for studying and working in Canada, but they make it so hard to do this.


Good luck to everyone in the same boat. I know how gutted you feel when your application is rejected after so much time, money, effort, stress and hard work went into it.

Well there you go, just add a very strong SOP to your application. The VO refused your application initially because they couldn't see the connection between your degree and work experience with the course you are planning to take - to them it means you might possibly not go back to your home country after your studies are finished.

Just explain how your past experiences/degree connect to social work, what your interest in it is, and more importantly how you plan to use what you've learned in your home country after you finish your studies. I don't think you'll have much of a problem if you have a good SOP

does it mean rejection or can i get passport
with visa and loi when i collect it

my application also got refused and i applied for caips notes to get exact reason of why they rejected.. and after getting result i will apply again,

i will strongly suggest you to first apply caips notes and make sufficient amendments in you document and youre ready to go ...

it will take 4-6 week for your caips notes...

no i didnt get any mail,

approval mail can be delayed due to some reason but if you dont get before your passport delivery.. so about 90 % its refusal.

i will strongly suggest you to first apply caips notes and make sufficient amendments in you document and youre ready to go ...
