Guys,

Do I need to apply for a study permit for my 11 year old son? I'm confused right now, some websites say that there's no need to apply for a study permit if the principal applicant will apply for study visa...

This is my case:
1.I am the principal applicant - I will apply for STUDENT PERMIT and TRV because I am from non-visa exempt country
2. For my partner- Temporary Resident Visa
3. For my son- Should it also be TRV? (Im not sure...please help!)

One more thing, if I am the principal applicant and they are my dependents, what will be their purpose of visit? Is it visitor or accompanying dependent?

Anyone?

Thanks

1. Your son will require a TRV and study permit.
2. Your spouse and child will be student and visitor, and s/he would be included on your study permit as a dependent, s/he could also apply for an open work permit.

1. For you: TRV and study permit
2. For your spouse: TRV and open work permit
3. For your son: TRV and study permit

They would be accompanying dependants.

Hi,

Thanks PMM and Leon!
By the way, will you please share a link regarding this? I can't find info about it...

I thought that I can just apply for an 'open study permit' once we get there...

Ok follow up question:
Do you know what will be the application fee for this? would it be:

a)
$125 - for me
$125 - my son
$150 - my partner
-----
$400

or

b)
$125 -for me
$400 -family fee
$125 -son
-----
$650

I need to apply for multiple visa for the 3 of us right? as I understand, single entry is only valid for six months...

The duration of my study in Alberta is for two years. I already have my letter of offer however, I do not have one for my son. Now, In the application form for student permit, under the Details of Intended Study in Canada, I will not be able to put any info since he has no letter of offer. So am I going to put not applicable or am I going to fill it in with my letter of offer information?

Thanks

If you go to https://services3.cic.gc.ca/efee/efee.do and calculate fees for 3 TRVs, 2 study permits and 1 work permit, you end up with 3*75, 1*150 and 2*125 or 625 total. That is for single entry TRV's. They can make them valid as long as the duration of your study permit.

If you want to leave Canada and re-enter during the time you are in Canada studying, you should go for multiple entry, then it would be 3*150, 1*150 and 2*125 or 850 total.

As for applying for the study permit later for your son, it would be considered misrepresentation if you applied for a TRV for him only and brought him in as a visitor when your intention is for him to study. The link to the immigration information is this one: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op12-eng.pdf and you should go to page 17 and it is at the bottom there.

You do not have to write that he has an offer. Write that he is an accompanying dependent of yours and that it is your intention that he studies at a local school in the grade appropriate for his age.

Hi there,

Leon, thank you so much for this info. This is definitely a great help.

I just want to clarify, according to this site: CIC (unfortunately,I am unable to post a link for some reason)

"If you are applying for a study or work permit and require a temporary resident visa, it is not necessary to make a separate application or pay a separate fee; an officer will issue it at the same time as the documentation necessary for your entry to Canada as a student."

Does this mean that I do not need to pay for the TRV fee since I am applying for a student permit and what I just need to pay is the student fee?
Have I misconstrued it? correct me if I am wrong...

Thanks!

Ok, I found it here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/5269E.PDF page 5. You are right, you don't have to apply separately for a TRV so it will just be 2 x study and 1 x work permit.

Hi Guys,

I have questions again. Kindly please advice...
It is regarding the IMM1294E/ Student Visa Application: DETAILS OF INTENDED STAY IN CANADA

Since my dependent isn't required to obtain a Letter of Acceptance, how will I answer the ff:

#1 I have been accepted at the following educational institution: ?
a) Name of School
b) Complete address of school in Canada

#2.My program of study will be:?
#3. Duration of expected study?
#4. Cost of my studies will be:?
#5. Funds Available for my stay:?

I got a validation error when I tried to leave at least one blank...

Please help Thanks! :)

Since you do not know yet what neighbourhood you will live in, you do not know the name and address of the school so just write "appropriate school for child's age" and for the address, just put the town. If they need it more detailed, write "neighbourhood where we will live" and the town.

For two, write "appropriate curriculum for child's age", for three write the length of your expected study since he is accompanying you and will be staying the same amount of time, for four put "N/A" (not applicable) because you are not expecting to be paying for him to go to school and for five put your fund information.

Hi there Leon,

another question...

I've contacted the call center today regarding the pick up our documents tomorrow and they informed me that I should put the application for my spouse and child in a separate envelope. How true is this? All our application is in one folder since they are my dependents and I am intending to put our application in one envelope so that the VO will know that they're my dependents...this is crazy

please advise. Thanks.

I do not know, haven't heard anything about this but you can put them in separate envelopes within one big envelope. On yours you write: "Application for Student visa" and on the ones for your dependents you write: "Dependents" and then put both of them in a bigger envelope and send it.
