Study Permit Challenges for Nigerian Applicants

Greetings All,

A lot of people have been asking questions that have been addressed here severally again and again. Please refer to this my old post. The first thing anyone wishing or desiring to apply for a study permit is to arm yourself with information and stop all these misplaced/misguided Faith without corresponding work, that is unable to produce actual desired results. Please carefully read through this info again and assess yourself whether or not you meet the minimum requirements to obtain a Canadian Study permit. By the grace of God I have applied for 10 people this year all got their visas in one go, except 1 who on re-application got it the second time. This cannot be attributed to Faith or luck alone, it is about understanding the process, the expectations of the VO and meeting and even exceeding the expectation of the VO. Happy reading.

Greetings!

GIS session #2

Anyone applying for study permit from Nigeria may be interested in the following data. It is the most updated data on the subject of study permit approval rates based on country of application. I will post data for Nigeria from 2012 to 1st quarter of 2017.

2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017(1st Quarter)

Total Number of applications 4,279 5,486 7,488 8,903 10,273 2,545

Total Number Approved 1,650 2,490 3,123 3,560 2,501 371

% Approval 39% 45% 42% 40% 24% 15%

Source of the above information can be obtained here https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/63858380-265e-4948-8e96-ca50fceca2d7?_ga=2.237275528.964540470.1501869032-771005413.1497994661

If you analyse the data closely, you will see that there has been a steady decline in number of study permits approved for applicants from Nigeria. Only God knows what the approval rates will be today. This is the reason why you cannot afford to be complacent with your application to the Canadian embassy. Furthermore, you need to be sure that you are able to meet the minimum requirements, if you don't meet it, you are very unlikely to get your permit approved. So a quick way assess yourself are as follows

1. Age:- You need to consider this in relation to the level of qualification you want to pursue. Ideally, 17-20 (Undergraduate), 21-24 (PGC/PGDs/Masters), 25-27(PGC/PGD/Masters + at least 2-3 years relevant work experience), 27 and above (PhD + relevant work experience). This is not to say people cannot get permits outside of this bracket, but what I have posted is just the most ideal.

2. Funding:- Very Very Very Very Important. if you cannot demonstrate in a compelling manner that you can afford to sponsor yourself without needing to work while studying, you will not get a permit.

3. Travel History:- Depending on your age, they may waive this or take it more seriously. For example, a 32 year old man with no international travel history is now applying for study permit to pursue a Masters degree. The chances of getting a study permit approval are highly unlikely, he could be lucky may if he is being sponsored by a government agency etc. International travel history is used by a VO to guage how you will abide by immigration rules, if you did not contravene immigration rules in your previous trips, then you are unlikely to do so now. So a good travel history is important

4. Employment History:- If you are a mature applicant, from 26 and above and you do not have a relevant work history or experience and you want to apply for study permit, you are unlikely to get approved.

So I will advise you to read through, critically assess yourself, and determine if you are in a position to get a permit, if you are then you can approach a professional to assist you, if you are not, don't bother, that professional will just take you for a ride.

I wish you all the best with your plans for Canada.

Hello Seunfunmi,

Thanks for visiting this thread.

It means the embassy is in their peak season, so your wait time will be longer. You just have to wait until they get back to you.

All the best.

I honestly do not have any clue. The Canadian study permit application process is the most unpredictable I am aware of. However the fact that since may your biometrics has been updated and you are yet to hear from them, I am a bit concerned, because I applied for two candidates on the 16th and 17th of May 2019 and they have since collected their visas, and will be traveling soon.

Let's know how it goes.

All the best.

Hello Blije,

I know a June 10th applicant who got their response exactly a month after. Sadly it is was not a favorable outcome. Though I was not involved in that specific application process. I know they are in their peak period at the moment, but typically I have gotten response from them within a month and few days this year. So I tend to worry, the longer it takes..

Wish you all the best.

Hello OMOFAR

Please, I would be very grateful to receive your advice for my case, as I intend to reapply for January 2020 intake after my refusal

I am 25, I applied for study permit and got rejected one month ago with the following reasons:
I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on the limited employment prospects in your country of residence.

I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on the purpose of your visit.

I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on your personal assets and financial status.

I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on your travel history.

Pursuant to paragraph 220(a) of the IRPA, I am not satisfied that you have sufficient and available financial resources, without working in Canada, to pay the tuition fees for the course or program of studies that you intend to pursue.

My sister living in USA was my sponsor and I have two brothers in Canada.

Now I intend to reapply in a different university but same program with this:

- Paid one year tuition fees
-open an account with 12 000 dollars in a Canadian bank
- a job confirmation letter

I don't really know what to do about personal financial asset ( i provided my father's death certificate and his lands certificate that I inherited for the previous appllication) and purpose of visit and travel history

Please, what do you think about my case and what are your suggestion? Is the fact that my sponsor is my sister in USA a problem? Or the fact that I already have brothers in Canada?

I would be very grateful to receive sincere advices from you.. Is it necessary to reapply with this improvement? or not?

Sincerely

Hello reapo,

I am sorry to hear about your predicament. Your family ties to Canada and US is a big problem, and I honestly do not how to advise you on this..It is a difficult one. Perhaps consider applying for your gcms notes, it may provide more insights into the VO's mindset. Its is always difficult to overturn a refusal, wish we had this conversation before you applied.

I wish you the best.

Good morning Omofar,
Been following this thread for a couple of weeks now.

So I Had my 1st application (online) back in April 2019, but was refused after 2weeks. I applied again on the 24th of June at VFS (paper application, non-bio, no upfront medicals though ). After my application, I received a confirmation email from them stating that my application has been processed and a tracking number and link to track the status of my application. Thereafter , a follow up email stating that my application has been forwarded to the Canada Visa Office Lagos, and that an auto email will be generated to informavout when the application is available for collection.

So basically, what I want to find out is if I’m to expect any other “acknowledgement email” from them stating my application number or application receipt, before (and this is me typing with strong faith in both God and my documents submitted) getting an email for Medical request?? Because I’ve been waiting and I still haven’t received any other email. I track the application on their website using the teaching ID provided and it just gives me the generic “Your visa application is being processed at the Canada Visa office”

Thank you so much in anticipation to your response.

Hello Jotemsi,

Thank you for visiting this thread.

You seem to be doing a lot of reading of my posts, I think that is commendable, a lot of people want to apply for study permit, but refuse to avail themselves of relevant information.

If the money is placed in your account today, you can demonstrate source of the funds by showing documentation to show the sale of the land transaction, a letter from your parents explaining that it is their desire to support you and they can include that they expect you to pay back the 'loan'. But since you are working as well, it will be good that you also show evidence of this. But the land must be sold first and the money placed in your account before application is made.

If all goes well and you apply online, your original passport request should be ready within 1 month and a few days. That has been the trend since the beginning of this year for all my clients.

I wish you the best.

Omofar
Hello I have a quick question about Proof of Funds for the study permit. Is it possible for me to be sponsored by another individual like an employer or close relative where they would issue an affidavit and their account statements stating their intention to sponsor my studies and that the money would be made available to me for the duration of my studies and I am not expected to pay back the amount that I am to be sponsored with. Would such an affidavit and bank statement be accepted?

I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards.

Hi,

The further away a third-party is from an applicant biologically, the more difficult it is to prove a close relationship that justifies the significant amount of funds to be expended on the applicant..

The VO always wants to know why a third party would be invested so much in an applicant's study to want to spend so much. A straight forward answer is Father-Child relationship, Spouse-Spouse relationship. Any other relationship must be properly explained and justified or else it is a waste of time especially in your case where you are a mature applicant. The best way to show third party sponsor would be for you to have paid all of your tuition for the 1st year of study, have all third-party sponsors who are not direct relatives pay the money into your account, and then you explain the source of the funds to the embassy by stating where you got the funds from.

Please note this is my personal opinion, you are free to proceed as you see fit.

All the best.

Omofar.

I was also initially reading without replying to a post, but having read questions from a whole lot of people here and the incredibly useful answers provided by respondents, not the least of which come from Omofar, I thought it wise to respond to this and to give general advice to whoever is interested.

Specifically addressing your immediately above questions, I would say it is a grave error not to include your letter of employment, letter approving your study leave and a letter of reference from your employer or supervisor or HR confirming your position, that you work with the organization and that you have requested a study leave to study in Canada, stating that you have indicated that you would return to your job after studies. This letter must be on company letterhead with address, email address and company phone numbers. This letter of reference is indispensable to your success, whether ot not your father is the one sponsoring your studies, these letters must be there.

If you applied online, or you have linked your paper application to an online account, please upload these documents I mentioned to update your application. I speak from experience, having gone through this process 6 years ago and living in Canada since then.
Hello,

Sorry to butt in on this conversation. But does it mean that in addition to the points you have listed it's alright to combine ones account statement with that of a sponsor including a letter of sponsorship etc?

Cheers.

Thank you very much for the response. I have two follow up questions.

In the case of a father - child relationship is it compulsory for the money to be in my account at the time of application or would including my dad's bank statement and letter of sponsorship with or without my own personal bank statement be acceptable?

Second question: is an uncle (mother's younger brother) an acceptable enough third party sponsor?

Cheers.
