Hi. I will be applying for student visa for PhD in university of waterloo for winter 2021 intake (phd in quantum computing). I have 3 publications and work in academia right now. All of my family is in Pakistan (ties to the country) but my wife has distant relatives in Canada (cousins). I will receive 25k CAD/year stipend from my supervisor and will be able to show finances to cover first year expenses. My wife will be traveling with me. I want to ask what is the rejection rate for Pakistani students for Canadian student visa?

Given your strong profile and the reputation of the uni you've been admitted into, I see the probability of them rejecting your visa is quite low provided you submit enough proof of financials since you'll be travelling with a dependent. Apply through SDS if possible as that helps you to improve the rate of approval significantly.

You should get approved right away. Apply as soon as possible. There is lot of delay in applications.

Thanks for the suggestion of SDS. It requires GIC. Since I will be getting scholarship from my supervisor will the university provide funds to the bank for GIC?

I highly doubt they will give you but you can reach out to your supervisor regarding this. GIC or not, either way you have to show funds to support your living and studies. I know for a fact that UWaterloo is very expensive. Is the stipend you get enough to cover both living and studying expenditures? If it's not, then it makes sense to get GIC since you'll be spending it anyway further down the line. If it makes your visa application process simpler I say go for it especially at a time like this when processing is highly hampered by covid. Anyway, fingers crossed lad. If things work out for both of us I hope we get to meet. I'm expecting my visa too to start master's there. Good luck.

You have a very good chance of getting an approval for the study permit. Please apply asap as there is huge delay in application processing. if you apply this month, you can a healthy chance to receive your SP before the Winter intake 21. Make sure you arrange your finances well.
