Harper and other Canadian politicians like to punch above their weight in foreign policy. Putin doesn't care about Obama let alone Harper. I am really surprised how Canada is in G7. Canada is too small to be a significant global power in terms of population and military. Apparently, Americans brought in Canada because European countries were opposing a lot of US policies. I read that in the book where they mentioned Jean Chretien say that.
you do realize that the G7 membership has nothing to do with population or military, and is based on the size of a country's economy, right?

G7 was originally designed to be a club of most important countries in the world to coordinate decision making on international finance/commerce/economic issues. At that time Canada was seventh largest economy. Right now Canada is 14th largest economy so it shouldn't be in G7. As for military and population, population is a big factor on the size of the economy. US has over 320 million population therefore it is the largest economy, Norway has twice higher per capita income but because of its small population it is not even in top 20 largest economies in the world. Military power is very important we have seen recently what Russia did to Crimea.

I will not argue further here since it is not part of the Bill C-24 billed Feb 6/2014 and I see no point arguing about it.
If you want to argue more you can send me a personal message here.

My background:
I am an international economics/relations graduate from US top school in international affairs and have experience working in IMF/World Bank and I was in G7/G8/G20 forums.

By that logic Russia shouldn't been added to G8 (or G7 rather). but we both know these groups aren't based on current economy or military power. rather post world war/cold war mentality.

No further development on this Bill. The First Reading is completed. House is meeting next week and then off week of April 14 and April 21, 2014. I do not believe its on the Agenda for next week either as per the Projected Order of Business.

Have a nice weekend all,

There is some news from the committee proceedings. It looks like we should relax for at least one month, as the debates and 6 meetings on Bill C-24 will start only on April 28, 2014.

"The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

That, notwithstanding the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the Committee undertake a study on the subject matter of Bill C-24, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, starting on Monday, April 28, 2014.

That six (6) meetings be devoted to hear from witnesses as follows:

• The Hon. Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) officials appear on Monday, April 28, 2014, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

• The Committee hear from stakeholders for an additional (5) five meetings.

That the total number of witnesses for this study be divided among the recognized parties according to their standings in the House of Commons: fifteen (15) for the Government (Conservative Party), eleven (11) for the Official Opposition (New Democratic Party) and two (2) for the other opposition party (Liberal Party). Does this mean it'll go to "Committee stage" on 28th April? and then they submit their report.

The bill is at the First Stage, as the Second was not finished. The following 6 meetings will debate on matters to be presented for the second reading and vote. After the second reading is completed (with a vote), the bill will go to the Committee for further discussions and amendments. Then Third Reading and I believe it will continue its path to the Senate for other 3 readings and final approval.
