Let's hope it takes years for this bill to pass!
Criticism of this bill's many section already started and govt. is aware of that. As of now we don't see they are in rush to get the law passed soon. But, it may not take years.. probably we could see end of 2014. For the time being CIC is happy to increase fees to $400 and changing application form with addition of work documents must submit with application. So, the intention is to reduce application backlog and speed up processing times..

How many "good job!"s and "Thank you so much"s does one have to receive for just providing a link to the official parliament website describing the progress of a bill? If you're reading this post and one person has already thanked the source, then that should be enough. I think he or she gets the gist that the thanks are collective from all of us.

Also, stop acting like sheep by asking "Where did u get this update from?" Where indeed? It's not secret information folks. If one of us can get it, anybody can (Hint: Familiarize yourself with Google).

C'mon people. You're about to apply for citizenship. Act maturely.
If you don't have any new information, then just passive reading of this post is also an option.

Just trying to eliminate redundancy and keep things on topic. Wasn't trying to be rude (not that I care if anyone thinks I was).
That was harsh buddy. Just two comments from me:

1. There is nothing wrong in Thanking People.

2. Just like you have mentioned, people could 'passively read this thread' and move on - perhaps, anyone like yourself and myself can read this and move on and not find fault in people who like to Thank others... You could have moved on as well. Not everyone is Google Educate here and being in Canada, we cannot say someone what to do and what not to do... again, there is nothing wrong in Thanking People. I started this thread and I did not expect people to thank me and neither I felt bad reading all those thank you notes and I did not comment just to make it simple.

My 2-cents.

In general many media (CTV/Toronto Star/Lawyers Group) are showing concern of many section of the new bill. As for debate we will have to wait when take place in the parliament on 2nd reading..

That's just the media and lawyers with a vested interest in this bill not passing. Last time I checked, the media and lawyer groups can't pass legislation. That would be the job of the Parliament, and for all my scouring of the internet, I still haven't seen any evidence that the members of parliament have serious concerns about the particulars of this bill.

You might be right in that they're not in a rush to pass this bill, but I think that's only because they have other things on their plate that interest them at this point. It's not necessarily because they have major objections to the bill.

Just for your information, for a bill to pass in Canada there are 6 steps :

1- First reading
2- Second reading
3- A Committee will meet to discuss it
4- The committee sends the report back to the house so it can be debated
5- Third reading
6- Governor General will review on behalf of the Queen and pass the law

The bill is still at stage 1. So it should take a couple more months if accepted.

Good summary except steps 1-5 have to be repeated in the Senate as well and since they do not seem to be doing so concurrently; add a couple of more months for that to happen

I think we should stick on the subject and post comments on relevant issues. Here in this topic post and comments should be on the status of the bill C-24 and its progress in the parliament..

Btw, as of now the bill is seating on the 1st reading.. Could move towards 2nd reading some time in March and then wait for member vote after heated discussion on the many section of the bill and refer to committee discussion/hearing/report/amendment etc and back to house again for 3rd reading. All these processes could take months..
I checked parliament website everyday to see what's on agenda for MPs to discuss and i hope it won't receive its first vote until late march or early april. Then the committee will take 2,3 months to study, debate details by details. when the calender flip to june and parliament will go on a 2 month summer break. so ideally hope it won't pass house of common until sep and then another 10 days to pass senate(super useless SENATE). once its all done, it will become law in early October. Call me a dreamer but i really hope it will take this long to become law. I am eligible to apply citizenship in 82 days but have travel plans for the summer and really dont want to just submit application right after i reach 1095.I rather submit with entry record from CBSA which will take at least 1 month to obtain. so hopefully can submit beginning of July. Good luck to everybody

Bill C-24 was discussed and briefly debated on Thursday Feb 27, 2014. The Parliament of Canada's website indicate its Second Reading of Feb 27, 2014. However, the official status of it still remains at one bar out of six bars and I am assuming its still at First Reading Official Status. Minister Alexander has indicated/expects it to be Proclaimed by the end of the Year (but no one knows how it will be looked at in the future readings). House of Common meets next week for all business days and DOES NOT meet 2nd and 3rd week of March 2014.

Have a nice and warm weekend,

Nothing will happen till April.. Assuming no debate in next week on this bill and then all will go for March break and the bill stays on 1st reading till April..

haha - they hardly know whats in a bill... i am sure they have a 'life' unlike us who check the status of the bill every second... if they read a bill as a night tie read, there wont be 2-years backlog of applications, they would have done something about it already...

I disagree...

MPs Lysane Blanche-Lamothe (NDP) and John McCallum (Liberal) are very well informed and spoke with true feeling BUT ALSO well researched reason. I somehow felt in much safer hands listening to them speak. Whereas with the Conservatives - you just felt a knot in the stomach, a growing mistrust that has just built up over time with the RQs, delays, excuses, fee raises, non-transparent ways of operating, mess-ups.....etc etc etc.......

I don't think these respectable and socially conscious MPs will allow themselves and the PRs to be "door-matted" just like that ! I see them putting up a good fight and for very good reason. And here things like the petition on Change.org from the TFWs and International Students (by member Sashali78) could potentially have a big impact, besides all the emails that these MPs are receiving from angry and concerned immigrants.

I definitely think they are listening to people. Its only the Conservatives who don't seem to care much - it was very evident listening to the Opposition MPs (who sit on the Standing Committee for Citizenship & Immigration) that they are paying very close attention to the increasingly loud complaints from people in their ridings.
