hello, maybe somebody can help me. Im from El Salvador and im living in canada since January with my visitor visa, my husband is canadian citizen and we sent our Fam sponsorship application on July. We found out i'm pregnant 4 weeks ago, and my due date is the first week of february 2014. My question is: Should we notify the office in Vegreville about the pregnancy?? And is there any way we could get any health insurance covering for delivery?? So far we have been paying for medical tests and ultrasounds. Thanks for your help.

I don't know what province you are in. There are a couple that offer health coverage before you get your PR, but not many. If you are in Ontario, you better start saving now because you will be paying all the bills out of pocket. I seriously doubt they will be getting to your application in the next few months. I think you should likely contact CIC and let them know about the pregnancy, however it is not going to alter your timeline for processing.

Good luck.

You might get coverage if you are in Alberta. They provide coverage to visitors. However if not, you are likely to be out of luck. No point in getting private medical insurance as they will not cover pre-existing conditions, in other words, won't cover baby delivery in first 9 months of policy.

So you better start saving a lot of money. Cheaper alternative is to hire a midwife.

HI, i am in Ontario :(
You might get lucky if you get AIP in time and baby comes 3 months after AIP date since you can get on OHIP 3 months after AIP issue date.

Ok so Ontario doesnt have any option of coverage before PR, does anybody have an idea how much it would cost for the delivery? normal or cea-section?

Ontario has option of coverage if they obtain AIP status and meet 3 month residency requirement for those who are waiting for PR inland. So as long as baby is going to be delivered after meeting the requirement I mentioned, you are fine. Outside of that, you are on your own.

Otherwise, $5,000 should cover it . . . so long as it's NOT a CS. We didn't tell CIC of our pregnancy before landing (even though visibly so, they didn't care), it's not required.

At a current 11 months stage 1 approval, you won't be eligible for health care until sometime after June 2014. So much too late for you to consider having your pregnancy costs/delivery covered under health care.

Costs for all the pregnancy tests/checks and a delivery at a hospital can run up to the $5000 range. Sometimes less if simple and easy, and sometimes more if there are any complications.

As an alternative you can check out using a midwife, which should be considerably cheaper.

I would like to see you provide a link saying she can get a midwife for free. They can go about 3000 for one. If she can get one for free, all the better but I highly doubt that she can find a midwife hired for free.

I go with my personal experience. I got my OHIP coverage only a month after our child was born and I was in Canada all my pregnancy period. The only things we were paying for were my bloodwork and the ultrasound.

And we did not pay for delivery either.

upon request:

What does it cost to use a midwife?

Midwifery services are completely funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, so women do not pay for care out-of-pocket. Women who are not currently covered by OHIP can still receive free midwifery care.
