Even mine case is similar to urs, I applied study permit for myself and open work permit for my husband on May 13th. My study visa got approved but my husband's visa is still awaited.

Processing time for SOWP is 2 months.

when my wife applied for her student visa she got it within 3 weeks, that was done in december. my sowp has been applied 2 months already n counting.

Even I got my study visa in 3 weeks.. for SOWP 6 weeks wait is over.. 2more weeks to go

Few queries..

1) Did you apply both (study & spouse visa together) (or) first study permit and later spouse visa?

2) Did u submit ur application by online or paper?

3) If paper application which VFS center did u submit the application?

4) Have u got ur passport with study permit stamped (or) CIC notified that ur study permit got approved?

5) BTW which univ or college u applied for study permit?

Hi all,

I got a question about medical exam of OWP. Please help me out.

I'm currently a postgraduate student in UK. I'm going to apply for an open work permit for Canada and go to Canada after graduation, to stay with my husband who is a postgraduate student in Canada. I just want to make sure if I need to take the CIC medical exam, as considering the country of my citizenship the exam is required but I’ve been resident in UK this one year before I go to Canada, without living or residence in other countries more than a month.

If you have been living in UK for a year, you most likely wont be asked for medicals.

both study visa and SOWP together thru paper based.
I submitted in Mumbai and it is in VFS Delhi. I got my stamped passport.
I applied for Univ of Ottawa

Ok. Did u apply on ur own (or) did u use any representative?

Bcs one of my friend got both visas(study & spouse visas) approved at a time for Jan intake,2016.

He applied for PG diploma program- @ lambton (SPP) college(2 years course) & his wife applied for open work permit...but they got both visas at a time from bangalore VFS center.

I am surprised that ur visa is approved and ur spouse application is in processing & i went through this forum came to know that CIC either will approve both visas (study & spouse opwp) (or) they will reject both visas. But ur scenario is different which I gone through this forum.

Do u have any idea why they are taking longtime to process the applications & I am worried bcs my wife applied for Sep intake & we dropped both visas on June 10th by using representative & we have very short period of time

If we get both visas by end of July we are in safe or else.....don't know need to think

I am surprised that ur visa is approved and ur spouse application is in processing & i went through this forum came to know that CIC either will approve both visas (study & spouse opwp) (or) they will reject both visas. But ur scenario is different which I gone through this forum.

Generally yes, this is how CIC works i.e. they try and usually process families together. But at times specially when the embassy is overloaded with applications, or they need more information to assess a particular person, these could be processed separately.

In general a Canadian embassy's order of priority of visa processing is Study permit > visitor visa > work permit

If a study visa application is submitted with a tight time line (as it seems above) it is possible.

If dependent spouse gets approved latter, they should simply travel latter although it is still possible that the result just comes a bit latter (a month in between max).

The only advice for now could be

a) If academic session start is getting closer, one case specific inquiry, politely requesting to hurry considering time line should be enough
b) If only SP is approved first, you can send a case specific inquiry (once every month requesting it to be processed so you could go together).

Actually my and my spouse's applications were sent in 2 separate dockets, this is reason which I presume has resulted in no response for SOWP yet.

You are welcome. Possibly that's the reason.

But I have seen apps sent together and still being processed separately - so that is still a possibility (though likelihood is certainly reduced)

You seem to be the most experienced of us all here. I had 2 rejections of Visitor visa b4. I applied Apr 22 2016 for sowp n no update yet. applied through a lawyer as a representative in canada. Last update my lawyer gave me was that application open. review of medicals passed and no additional document or interview nneeded at this time. final decision not started. I did ask the lawyer after 2 months n she said she will do CSE.

What would be your advise for me? this forum just helps me keep my patience. god bless us all

Hi Yadav,

Assuming your spouse is in Canada on a SP or WP, a visitor TRV is almost always the wrong choice, because its insanely hard to convince CIC that you intend to come here for a brief visit. Spouse of a student or worker intends to live here with them for as long as they are here. So I won't think much about TRV refusals.

On your current app, of course there is not much to wait. Approval or not would depend upon how strong a profile you have in home country along with your spouse's current position in Canada and hoping your lawyer provided all support docs.

ya thats tru. i did give all as per the lawyer for docs like my salary slips, my wifes bank statement, my bank statement for 6 months and invitation letters, PCC medicals all have been given upfront. well im hoping since we took the right steps n thru an attorney it will b fruitful afterall. Its really hard to stay away from spouse. I wish cic will respond soon in the 9 weeks time as they mention on their website. Thanks bro and god bless

So I applied for my wife's SOWP on 06th of May from Bangalore VFS, Waiting fingers crossed for a positive result. Judging by the timelines i should have an answer within the next two weeks.

But knowing CIC , I could be wrong anyways hoping for the best. If there is anyone who has applied around the same time as me , please update the timeline and status
