I am a canadian citizen living in Europe and I am the sponsor of my spouse. She received her CoPR 7 days ago and has a deadline of December 16 and now my question is does she need to land in Canada before the 16th December ? In other words, we are not planning on moving to Canada until mid 2016, yet as we understand due to the fact that the medical report which she underwent when filing all the docs is only good for one year then the date of December 16 2015 is the one year term and to avoid any problems we thought she should fly into Canada and then once she goes through whatever process she needs to at the point of entry she could board a flight back to Europe...? Question I guess is does she need to land get a stamp and/or what is the process once you land at the point of entry?

I would really appreciate any of your suggestions and/or comments.

Thank you,

Yes - she needs to land before December 16th. She can land and then return to Europe immediately afterwards and move to Canada later. Landing involves entering Canada and passing through immigration so that they can stamp your COPR and activate it (i.e. make you a permanent resident). I would make sure you have at least four hours between the times she lands and her return flight since she will need time to pick up her luggage, go through immigration, land, check her luggage back in, etc.

She will need to provide a Canadian address for the mailing of her PR card.

What if the principal applicant is already visiting Canada when CoPR is received?

In this case I assume that the COPR was sent to the applicant's home address so the applicant would not have the COPR in hand.

Unless you mean a long term visit/applicant has been in Canada during the process, in which case they can cross over to the USA and enter back in to Canada to land assuming you live close enough to the border to drive there.

Thank you,
What to do, right from CIC website:

How do I validate a Confirmation of Permanent Residence or a permanent resident visa if I live in Canada?

If you already live in Canada, you have two options to become a permanent resident:

You can make an appointment at a Citizenship and Immigration (CIC) office near where you live in Canada. To do this, contact CIC’s Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100. You cannot call this number if you are outside Canada.

If your permanent resident visa (or one of your family’s) expires in two months or less, please tell the Call Centre that you need urgent processing.

If you are not able to make an appointment as set out above, you may leave Canada and return through an international airport or a Canadian land border.

When you arrive, a CIC officer will interview you, and grant you entry into Canada based on the information in your visa.

In either case, you will have to show the officer:

your passport, travel or identity document (including your visa sticker, if you have one), and
your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, permanent resident visa, letter of introduction or any instructions from the Canadian visa office, and
your proof of legal status in Canada, such as a valid work permit, study permit, temporary resident permit, or visitor document, or any immigration document you have (whether valid or not), or
proof of implied status (if you applied to extend your stay before it ended). Proof of this status may include:
payment receipt,
copy of your application to extend your stay,
printout of online application, or
proof of mailing.
Note: You must leave Canada, enter another country and re-enter Canada to become a permanent resident at an international airport or Canadian land border. If you need a visa to enter another country before you re-enter Canada, it is up to you to get the visa.

You will do these procedures at the first place you arrive in Canada. If you are travelling by air, make sure you have time before any connecting flight or other travel.

If you choose to leave and re-enter Canada at a land border, especially during the peak periods of weekends and holidays, you may have a long wait time for service.
I know that she did not live in Canada, but still needs to land the same way, just don't worry about proving her status part.

Hi,

Luckily my husband and I live close to the border, I´m from Ontario and he´s from Pittsburgh! We plan to stay together in Canada while our application processes, so now we know what to do. Thank you for your helpful response. :D I really appreciate it, this forum is AWESOME!
